The News Journal on Doing Nothing
So, like, the News Journal had this really cute editorial about, umm, Mayor Dennis Williams not writing any emails. I mean really who writes emails anymore?
Not An Ad
Probably everyone that comes to Delaware Liberal has read The News Journal at some point of their lives. They might not be a subscriber right now, but they are running a new sale that is quite good: $19.99 for one year.
The News Journal Endorses Eugene Young for Mayor!
I wasn’t sure if the NJ would even endorse this year given that the field never winnowed. But between the debates they sponsored and the poll they did on this race, the NJ did a good job n trying to engage the community outside of their pages. But the News Journal officially endorsed Eugene Young for Mayor of Wilmington. Go read their entire endorsement.
What’s Going On at the News Journal?
I heard today from an reliable Anon Tipster that the News Journal may be making its staff re-apply for jobs like some other Gannett newspapers have earlier this month. There may be even more (!)layoffs coming as they re-organize. If you’ve been following the Gannett news, they acquired a broadcasting company last year. Gannett is creating what they call the “Newsroom of the Future” (even though Jim Romanesko notes that they did this in 2006, too). Re-applying for their jobs has been done or in progress at other Gannett newspapers.
QOD — Weigh In On the New Delawareonline Interface
Thanks to Steve Newton here, we have a new Question of the Day?
Does anybody else hate the new even-less-functional-than-before Delaware Online interface as badly as I do?
I Resent The News Journal’s Desperation
I found this Subject Heading in my email inbox today:
Action Required Regarding your News Journal Account
Wow! That sounds important. Did I miss a bill? What’s the problem? Because there’s obviously a problem that requires action.
I opened the email ASAP, and here’s what I found….
In Which We Find John Stapleford Blaming Black and Brown People for Big Government
That was the nicest title I could come up with after reading this new bit of stupidity from John Stapleford of the brain dead CRI. Titled What role does government aid play in elections?, we find Stapleford trying to gin up some numerical proof for Mitt Romney’s claim that Obama won because he gave out gifts to key voter groups. And as usual for Stapleford, he produces a ton of numbers that aren’t sourced anywhere, counting on readers not to notice and counting on readers to not ask questions about the numbers he provides. In other words, it is the usual CRI bullshit. And I want to know how he gets paid for this. Seriously. And explain to me how it is that wingnut welfare — which Stapleford is clearly a beneficiary of — isn’t it’s own gift to the angry white people being paid to push this bullshit to people who really need better information than this. Because I’d bet ALOT OF MONEY that the number of wingnut welfare recipients that voted for Mitt Romney approaches 100%.
Question of the Day
Why is The News Journal lazy? Specifically, why when there is a state story that may be considered a scandal do they always turn to Greg Lavelle for a quote? Is Charlie Copeland that busy that they can’t alternate weeks?
News Journal Keeps It Classy
The News Journal recently fired a new reporter even before he started working there because he “released” a press release on his Tumblr that contained both The News Journal’s logo and quotes from the hiring letter. Khristopher Brooks called shortly before 6 p.m. ET to tell me that the News Journal fired him this afternoon […]
Adventures in Subscribing to the Digital News Journal
So the NJ has put up their paywall, and you are limited to 5 articles (per week? per month?) and they helpfully count down the number of free articles you have left in a box in the lower right hand of your screen every time you click on a new article. I waited until the paywall finally went into effect to sign up (for the record, I actually buy this paper every day I am in town) and preserve my access to online articles. I’ve tried subscribing twice online and finally called today to figure out why I still can’t get the NJ online.
NJ Truthiness Watch — Women’s Health Care is Not Important Unless Men Say It Is
The editorial in Saturday’s NJ does a couple of dumb and dangerous things in siding with the religious leaders who have been howling about the Obama Administration’s ACA rule that religious institutions need to provide contraceptive coverage to their female employees as part of a preventative care package. This isn’t the first time that the NJ editorial has been quick to join the war on women’s health care. And as usual, the NJ editorial staff doing the writing of this thing never bothered to inform themselves of the facts of this business and pretty much just repeat what they see on cable TV.
NJ Truthiness Watch — Women’s Health Is Too Expensive
This new bit of tone-deafness and just plain disinformation from the News Journal Editorial page on the possible inclusion of contraception for women as a must cover with no co-pay item (as part of a number of women’s wellness services) inspired this collaborative post from Unstable Isotope, Pandora and me in response.
Ground Zero of Delaware truthiness printed up an opinion piece today on the recommendation by the International Institute of Medicine that health insurance plans be required to include women’s contraception as a basic part of their services and that contraception be provided with no co-pay. Titled Free birth control comes at a cost, the apparent point of this is to tell people that contraception costs money. And if it is required care and required to have no co-pay,then the entire cost gets covered by insurance.
NJ Truthiness Watch — Wagging Their Finger at American Political Debate
The Sunday NJ brings us an editorial with this amusing observation:
