I want to pay more taxes

Filed in National by on January 8, 2009

So do a whole bunch of other people who play poker online.

The government is passing up hundreds of millions if not billions in revenue by not regulating and taxing online poker.

Anyway, I hear Obama is a poker player, maybe there is hope for a more sane online poker policy under this administration.

  1. but but.. I thought that gambling was a regressive tax on the uneducated poor….

  2. Mike Protack says:

There should be no taxation on the internet, that is a terribly bad idea.

While the WaPo was detailing all of the fines the government was racking up, I’d like to know how much all of this enforcement is costing us. With everything that is important in the world, it seems cleaner to legalize it and give it a really hefty tax.

  4. Art Downs says:

Internet gambling should be allowed. What should be prohibited is the enforcement of any debt associated with the process.

    Brian,

I knew I was possibly opening my self up to charges of hypocrisy, but here is my thinking.

My vices are okay. Everyone else’s are bad.

  6. Dana says:

Jason, if you want to pay higher taxes, there is absolutely nothing which prevents you from making a donation to the United States Treasury! Please, feel free!

  7. anon says:

Dana… there is also nothing preventing you from signing up to fight with the side you support in foreign wars. Some things are just done better as a group effort.

  8. Dana says:

anon: I’m too old, but my older daughter leaves for basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, on the 20th. Hope that’s good enough for you.

  9. Sharon says:

Aside from the fact that if one joins the military, it’s voluntary. Just see what happens if you determine that paying taxes isn’t something you want to do.

Hey, I’m all for people who think taxes are too low paying more. Give all the money you want to the government if you think it helps.

On your way to Republican-hood. Next up, the men’s room at the Maryland House Rest Stop.

  11. jason330 says:

    Sharon you are an idiot.

  12. arthur says:

better yet Jason, if you got off our ass and flew to vegas for 3 days, stayed in a hotel and gambled out there you would be supporting the economy and helping sirculate money. ergo, you would be payin gmore taxes.

  13. jason330 says:

    Idiocy abounds.

  14. G Rex says:

I never got into poker – not a good enough bullshitter I guess. Stands to reason that Obama would be a master…I kid, really!

So anyway, sure they should tax gambling winnings just like regular earnings regardless of whether it’s online or in a casino. If I make money on an online stock trade, I have to pay taxes on it, so why shouldn’t losers in their pajamas playing Texas hold ’em in their parents’ basements?

Full disclosure, a cousin of mine washed out of the Naval Academy in his senior year because of internet gambling and subsequently had to enter the Navy as an enlisted man to pay back Uncle Sam, so don’t count this as an endorsement.

One question, if you have to declare your winnings to the IRS, do you get to write off your losses? I’ve only been to Atlantic City once, and didn’t play a single hand.

    Indeed.
