Brandywine Valley Drive of a Lifetime

Filed in Delaware by on August 1, 2009

The National Geographic Traveler magazine has a feature called Drive of a Lifetime, and the Brandywine Valley makes this list in this month’s issue. So check it out:

It is always nice when a local treasure gets deserved recgnition. Many of you reading are native Delawareans, so help me out here:

  • Would you add any Must See stops to this Brandywine Valley Drive?
  • What are other Drives of a Lifetime here in Delaware?

Tell us what you think in the comments.

  1. Thanks for that, Cassandra. I’ve spent dozens of hours trolling those awesome backroads over the past decade. Nice to see the region getting the praise it deserves.

  2. Two places come immediately to mind: Valley Garden Park and Ashland Nature Center.

The drive down Rt. 9 from Delaware City to outside Dover. One weekend we got our state map and stopped at every ‘town’ on the Delaware Bay from Collins Beach to Kitt’s Hummic (sp.?) to Bombay Hook; visit the Octagonal School house, the Port Penn ‘marsh walk’ & musuem, the country store in Leipsic, Sambo’s crab house, the incredible marsh at Sunset, take your binaculars, climb the tower, go crabbing off a small bridge, etc., etc., etc.

In order to enjoy this road trip you must be able to ignore the nuclear power plant across from Augustine Beach.

The Rt 9 drive is a very good one! Thanks, Susan.

Has anyone done his section of Rt 9 on a bike? Am wondering how safe it is…

Cassandra….I believe that is the “Bike to the Bay” route: over Reedy Point Bridge which is outside of Delaware City.

The marsh/bay view from the top of the bridge is grand. It’s easy to go under the bridge and out on the C & D jetty…totally cool. Do take a hat or wear a hoodie….it can be windy as hell out there.
