RD 37 Special Election Results Thread

Filed in Delaware by on September 12, 2009

We forgot to put up a thread this morning reminding people of the 37th Representative district to vote today. The special election for replace Joe Booth featured 37 year-old public defender Rob Robinson and 50-something lobbyist and realtor Ruth Briggs King. We’ll post results as we see them.

Department of Elections on-line results.

Really would be a shame to see a pro growth, anti environment, active lobbyist, republican win.

  2. If you want the first indication again, make sure to visit us U. I. Anon you are getting my hopes up. That’s the way I roll.

  3. Delaware Dem says:

1 district has reported, with only a 1% turnout.

62 votes for RBK. 42 for RR. A 60-40 breakdown so far.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

Oh yes, and it looks like the Department of Elections site is working again. Thank God, or else I would have to visit that DP cess pool.

  5. Delaware Dem says:

    3 of the 8 precincts reporting….

698 for RBK. 411 for RR. a 62-38 breakdown. Looks like King’s night.

  6. Delaware Dem says:

4 of the 8 precincts in… King’s margin is increasing. A 63-37 breakdown. I am calling it, congrats to Representative Ruth Briggs King. A lobbyist goes to Dover.

  7. Looks like turnout was really low. Does anyone know that number of registered voters in that district?

  8. We have already declared King the winner based upon GOP vote watcher results. See the totals at our “cess pool” which is apparently better feed than the self proclaimed “premier site”.

  9. Delaware Dem says:

I don’t know the number, but turnout is now at 10% of that number, with only 1500 votes total, absentee and machine, so far.

  10. Delaware Dem says:

Oh, by the way, David, we did not proclaim ourselves anything. Cato at Delmarva Dealings, a conservative rag more horrible, and popular, than your cess pool, did.

    Enjoy your obscurity.

  11. David,

If your blog is serving people better than ours does, then people will read it.

The vote totals seem to be stuck now, with 4 of 8 districts reporting.

  12. anon says:

There are 13,870 registered voters in the district.

  13. jason330 says:

Hasn’t Sussex County already pretty much decided that it wants to be a shit hole? These results are academic.

  14. Rebecca says:

We lost by 324 votes, in Sussex. That is not shabby. Robinson ran a good race. He can always come back next year and take another run at it.

  15. They are, but I don’t know that it is a competition. There is enough room in cyberspace for everyone. Can’t we all get along?

I will be waiting for you to allow two posts from a Republican committee member touting his candidate like I did with Perry Hood a 37th Democratic Committee member, so our readers could understand the entire picture. I would also note that I have said good things about Governor Markell, President Obama, Senator Carper (more good about the senator than you) Darrell Scott, Thurman Adams and Bob Venables. We have also criticized positions by each of them. We call it by the issue as well as the party. We are Republicans and proud of it, but that does not mean Democrats are creeps. That is sort of a counter revolution of thought.

I have confidence in my position, what about you? The only time I see a guest post from a Republican is if they are criticizing Republicans. I will be curious to see what approach works in the long run. Probably both.

  16. I think Robinson was an excellent candidate. I hope he’ll challenge King again in 2010.

  17. Miscreant says:

“Hasn’t Sussex County already pretty much decided that it wants to be a shit hole? ”

I can’t remember the last time I saved up all year for a two week vacation in the cultural wonderland of New Castle County.

  18. jason330 says:

I think the state has pretty much decided to be a shit hole except for maybe a couple of towns upstate that still say “no” to developers once in a while. Delaware’s shit hole development standards is a battle that has been fought and lost. That’s all I’m saying.

  19. I would love to see that as well U. I. for other reasons. I think a rerun of the race will be a rerun of results. Robinson was an excellent candidate, but I don’t think anyone they will pick can win that seat next year particularly if unemployment in Delaware is still above 7% in November of next year.

  20. nemski says:

    Sussex = Jebusland

  21. Miscreant says:

I concur on the issue of development down here. It’s out of control.

  22. anononthisone says:

I wish the hell they’d develop some culture and some reasonable retail locations here in western Sussex. Might actually bring some jobs to the area. But it’s ok, we have Wal-Mart…

  23. I agree that development needs to be scaled back. The true cost to the county for adding these developments needs to come out of the developer. The infrastructure upgrade costs are overwhelming.

It is so simple to do. Add up all of the current costs for everything infrastructure related… Police, fire, schools, roads, sewer, dump impact, environmental impact, etc etc… and divide by the number of households served. That number is the tax that should be placed, per household, on each new house built. Just tack it onto the mortgage because you know the developer will just pass the buck into the cost of the home anyway. Pull infrastructure upgrade costs through that funding and voila! All of your upgrades needed are funded, and it is fair.

It won’t pay for the county’s past sins, but that is another story.

  24. Art Downs says:

The Dems made a good choice with Robinson. He is articulate and attactive. His campaign was negative and made a play to the NIMBY crowd.

The Republicans could have gone through the Robinson record and found quite a few nasty thugs that he got off who went on to other crimes. I suspect more than a few of them were ‘as innocent as OJ’. Yet he was doing his job. Still, with the recent cop-killing, an emotional (but somewhat irrelevant) appeal might have brought in some more votes.

  25. Miscreant says:

Maybe I haven’t had enough whiskey today (yet) to understand. Where the fuck were you going with that?
    Thanks in advance.

  26. Delaware Dem says:

I have had two Lagers and have no idea. I suppose Art is implying that Robinson’s work as a PD hurt him after the police offer was killed.

  27. Barack Obama says:

I stand here today humbled by the task before dofus kamas, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our cheap dofus kamas. I thank President dofus for his service to buy dofus kamas, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition.
