Doug Williams (NJ’s Political editor) shows a rare glimpse of his subtle wit

Hilarious. In the lead to the Markell vs. Carney story, the News Journal acknowledged that there is no such thing as a state wide Republican Party.

State Treasurer Jack Markell called Democratic Party leaders today to tell them he will run for governor, setting up the first Democratic primary for governor since 1992.

With the move, Markell rejects a deal Democratic Party leaders proposed — that Markell run for lieutenant governor and allow Lt. Gov. John C. Carney Jr. to run unopposed for the state’s top elected office.

Unopposed. Let’s face – he is right. Whoever wins this thing is the next Governor of Delaware.

yup and in this one-liner in today’s editorial on Markell:

A contest between two qualified candidates such as Mr. Markell and Mr. Carney may give the pols heartburn, but it could stimulate the voters. A high-quality race, with a serious airing and discussion of the issues, could only benefit Delaware. It could even force any Republican or independent candidate to tackle issues seriously.
