Potentially Devastating Grapevine Column on Biden

Filed in National by on December 20, 2007

Celia sure picked a strange time to have some journalistic integrity. Perhaps it is because Biden ran afoul of Cohen’s sense of history. She is nothing if not nostalgic.

Regardless, if this perks to the national press, it could be the end of Biden’s 2nd run for the nomination.

I’m not linking to it.

Biden in my new (Aristotelian tragic) hero

Aristotle once said that “A man doesn’t become a hero until he can see the root of his own downfall.” An Aristotelian tragic hero must possess specific characteristics, six of which are below[2]:

    1. Nobility (of a noble birth) or wisdom (by virtue of birth).
    2. Hamartia (translated as flaw or error of judgment).
    3. A reversal of fortune (peripeteia) brought about because of the hero’s Hamartia.
    4. The discovery or recognition that the reversal was brought about by the hero’s own actions (anagnorisis)
    5. The audience must feel dramatic irony for the character.

Initially, the tragic hero should be neither better or worse morally than normal people, in order to allow the audience to identify with them. This also introduces pity, which is crucial in tragedy, as if the hero was perfect we would neither be outraged with their fate not care especially due to their ideological superiority. If the hero was evil, then the audience would feel that he had got what he deserved. It is important to strike a balance in the hero’s character. – wikipedia

This is surprising considering Celia’s penchant to be so far up our US Congressional Delegation’s collective asses. I think it’s a combination of her dusting the cobwebs off of her journalistic yesteryear and the fear that she could lose access to her precious Joe should he become president. It could also be her ego tripping over the opportunity to knock someone off their perch.

On the article, if his intent is to use this to score political points, I can’t help but to find that pathetic. I came so damn close to losing my wife by a jackass who crossed a double yellow on Boyd’s Corner Rd in 2005 @ 50 MPH (hit her head on). I may empathize with someone in a similar situation, so they can have a friend to talk to, but the thought of using that to garner a higher standing…never.

IMO, I think Celia’s bullet goes not very far on its own. The only way it does is if she calls in a few friends that work the wire…which she may do.

I always wonder how it makes Jill Biden feel when Joe trots out his 30 year old sob story….

Look folks, I am NO Joe Biden fan, but….

The fact is pretty well-established in grief research that people tell and retell themselves these kinds of stories until they come up with a version or versions that they can live with.

Which would you find more palatable to belive 30 years later, that your wife and daughter were victims of someone else’s negligence/malfeasance or that she got distracted going through an intersection and got herself and her child killed?

Yeah, I know that Joe has the rep of being able to use anything to get ahead, from his bonded teeth to somebody else’s speeches, and–again–I don’t like his politics.

But the difficulty with coming to grips with that day thirty years ago makes him more human for me.

Nor do I really want to hear all the crap about “the man’s running for President, he’s got to be able to handle that kind of thing,” or he’s just being like Clinton remembering those black churches that never burned in Arkansas.

I’m curious to see, given the general feel I get from the blogosphere that Christianity ain’t all it’s cracked up to be, where forgiveness and understanding is going to rate on this story.

Memory is notoriously faulty. The mind is not a recorder, as recent research on the unreliability of eyewitness accounts of crimes makes clear. Frankly, if his wisecrack about Indians and his sloppy language about Obama haven’t hurt him, I have a hard time seeing how this will make a dent.

Looks like we won’t see any more about this, unless Joe starts winning.
