Mr Celery

Filed in National by on May 23, 2008

I don’t know if this is true but someone told me the story of the origins Wilmington Blue Rock’s other mascot, Mr. Celery.

It seems when the Blue Rocks were just getting started here in Delaware – before the stadium was finished – they rented some office space.

In that office space they found a celery costume in closet and some materials that indicated that the space had once been rented by some kind of produce marketing association.

Over a few beers as the work day wound down some of the blue rocks admin staff started messing around with the costume and someone said, “We need to figure out how we can use this thing…”

The rest is minor league baseball history

I am a huge Mr. Celery fan. I think the story is that the PMA or someone had a series of these costumes for “PMA Night at the Blue Rocks” or some such thing. Mr. Celery was so funny that the fans demanded he stay…

I have been given many Mr. Celery gifts in the past few years, due to my undying love for that dancing vegetable.

This may be, in fact, too much information, LG.
