Does he deserve it?

Filed in National by on August 7, 2008

Bill Clinton will be speaking at the Democratic Convention.

Hardly shocking news and Obama’s wise to do it, but after his performance this week does he deserve it?

Well, some people think the fact he is scheduled to talk before the VP is telling.
They think it is because it will be Hillary.

Since I am confident this is non-sense, I have another theory.
Doesn’t the fact Bill is speaking before the VP force him to be gracious about said VP and provide a photo-op between the two ?
Doesn’t that sort of forces a “blessing” of the former to the latter ?

Anybody following my train of thoughts ? What kind of VP Barack would pick that he would need Bill’s implicit – if forced – blessing to make sure it is accepted without grumblings ?

  2. pandora says:

Fascinating theory, and you may be right. I’m not very pleased with Bill’s behavior right now. That “no one’s really prepared to be President” crap infuriated me. Especially since he must have said a million times that “Hillary is ready on day one.”

I’m actually coming to the conclusion that Bill “subconsciously” sabotaged his wife’s campaign, and with this weeks comments may have hurt her VP chances.

  3. benjamin says:

All i will say is that I am not a fan of Bill Clinton and not only is he hurting her VP chances (cough) but tell you what ? He is being very very very idiotic for 2012.
Because how can they seriously think they could unify the party in 12 if Obama were to lose (unlikely but let’s imagine) ?
I mean their behavior is so incredibly classless and self-centered it is unbelievable and they would have no room to try and make up with us then if they were to win a primary. Do they really think we would not pull that kind of shenanigans on them just for the sake of it ? At least Hillary is trying. Bill is just a pathetic bitter old man right now.

And don’t get me started on the race-baiting stuff.

I think Chuck Todd says it the best.

“But we’ve asked this question a million times and we ask it again: Would the Clintons have been as deferential (or be expected to be as deferential) to Obama if the roles were reversed? What has happened over the last few days has given Obama the high ground here.

  4. pandora says:

Good! Obama does best on high ground.

What are you still doing up?

  5. benjamin says:

I am on the other coast. πŸ™‚

Really? How did you find us?

  7. benjamin says:

I have been a reader for several years. Looooooooooooong – yet weird – ties and obsession with Delaware and very serious plans to move there soon.

And actually funnily enough, back then, I found you through Dave Burris’ blog which was the first one to come up when you Googled DE political blog at the time and he had you in his blogroll and I soon realized I cared more about your brand of commentary than his πŸ™‚

  8. pandora says:

    Obsession? With Delaware? Intriguing.

    Well, it’s late here… so I’ll say good-night. πŸ™‚

  9. benjamin says:

Well most people think it is odd but I will settle for intriguing πŸ™‚

    Nitey nite

That was fun! Welcome West Coaster.

Good morning. Here’s my thing. Bill has never been great. His DLC and triangulating thing has been a disaster for true Democrats. His totally bizarre behavior in office set up the Gore defeat and damned us all to eight years of, gosh I can’t even say it.

I think it is amazing that he’s been asked to speak at the convention but I guess a former prez is always invited. The nation is watching and we trot out our biggest black eye, and pretend that he isn’t. It’s gotta make you wonder about our sense of reality.

    Have a great weekend all.

  11. Pandora says:

Bill Clinton has to speak at the convention and he should – just imagine the drama if he didn’t. I guess I picked the word deserve for a reason.

I honestly don’t understand where he is coming from. His actions only hurt Hillary and marginalize himself. Why stir this crap up just as the primary wounds were healing?

  12. mike w. says:

Why not? He has done a lot for the Democratic Party in the past.

  13. Philo says:

Hillary will be the Democrat candidate in 2012.

What will happen in the next three months will write new chapters in the history books, and will surpass any previous political moves.

The post 2008 editions of Macchiavelli’s The Prince will come with a foreword full of comparisons!!

  14. scarey but very, very possiblePhilo. 4 years is a long time though. She will be 67 then I believe and if Obama does a good job she is toast…

sad she can’t take the high road.

All the young voters Obama is attracting spell death for her in 4 years IMO though.

  15. Dana says:

The man was the last Democratic President of the United States; that means that he deserves it.

  16. Jason330 says:

the fact that Republicans think it is a great idea gives me pause.

  17. ben,

the state if full, try Tuscany.

  18. TRUTH TELLER says:

Wake up folks the MSM has been pushing this BS for months . the story last week on MSNBC was that Bill and OBAMA had only one phone call since the primary ended. Now yesterday Obama blew that theory to hell when he stated that he and bill has had several since then working out the President’s roll at the convention.Look this has been the MSM agenda to try to get Obama off message and put some controversy into the convention. I am surprised that folks like yourselves have fallen for this press set up.

  19. pandora says:

Agree that the Clinton/Obama relationship is much ado about nothing.

However, the ABC interview was all Bill’s doing. Please explain how Mr. “Hillary is ready on day one” now says that no one is ready to President.

    Nasty and stupid.

  20. mike w. says:

The media is talking about it simply because it’s something to talk about.

  21. Dana says:

    Pandora asked:

I honestly don’t understand where he is coming from. His actions only hurt Hillary and marginalize himself. Why stir this crap up just as the primary wounds were healing?

You are assuming that Bill Clinton is a Democrat in more than name only. He is actually a Clintoncrat, whose interests are himself, himself and himself, to the exclusion of all other things.

  22. pandora says:

Sad, but you may be right. Consider me disillusioned.

  23. anon says:

What is far more interesting than bashing the Clinton’s (insert 18 million votes and the last dem President to get reelected since 1945 here and contrast with a first term senator with no foreign policy, national security, military, executive or economic experience who just can’t seem to pull away from a senile old (oil)man in the polls or stop flip flopping his various “policy” positions) is the Olympics started today. Obama is taking two weeks of vacation. He has not selected a VP (as was widely thought he would have done by now. I mean, they have work to do to convince the American public they can pull this off, right?) The Olympics end on the 23rd. The democratic convention starts on the 25th. Perplexing indeed. Biden. Too old. Can’t run in 2016. Bayh. Another Senator and from the North. Does nothing. Kaine. hmmm. maybe. No harm, no foul. But what does he really bring? Certainly not experience with anything other than a little executive. McCaskill and Seb? Jeez. Those are disaster picks that would further splinter the Party. Let’s see. Who’s left?

  24. he is still leading McCain in ALL polls. History shows (past 3 elections) that the younger voters pay attention late. we are 90 days out, we still have a long way to go

  25. anon says:

he is still leading McCain in ALL polls.

By one point in Gallup, 1 point in Rassmussen – well within the margin of error. Besides, it seems awful close for any democrat running against any republican in a national election. Come on, admit it….the guys got some real problems and it’s shocking he doesn’t have a 20 or 30 point lead?

Oh. And by the way, you really aren’t going to try and sell me that young people haven’t made up their mind in this election yet? LOL. THE DEMS ARE COUNTING ON THE YOUTH VOTE.

  26. mike w. says:

“LOL. THE DEMS ARE COUNTING ON THE YOUTH VOTE.”

my thoughts exactly. Every election they say “this is the year young people will really turnout to vote.” Every time they grossly underestimate the apathy of young people.

  27. TRUTH TELLER says:

    Anon
You are so right he should be 30 to 40 points ahead considering Bush’s record over the last 8 years. This is no time to take a 2 week vacation he should be out there kicking ass. I am awaiting Hillary’s speech this afternoon in Nev. for him maybe she will inject some life into his campaign. let us not forget toward the end of the primaries when it appeared that she could not over take him he had a tendency to coast and he lost several key states to her.

  28. yes he does says:

of course he deserves it, he’s a former president who ended 12 years of the reagan/bush syndrome…stupid question

  29. anon says:

I’m starting to sense fear and loathing by the messiah’s supporters. They seem nervous. my lord, if he loses….anyway, I write a blog about how its a little odd Obama didn’t select a VP and now has the Olympics hanging over his head for the next two weeks and then the convention starts….and how all of the VP picks don’t solve the basic Obama problem: a first term senator with no foreign policy, national security, military, executive or economic experience who just can’t seem to pull away from a senile old (oil)man. I mean, if Obama was confident with any of his selections, he surely would have made it by now. So my little Hillary and Bill plugs: insert 18 million votes and the last dem President to get reelected since 1945 here and you have a landslide win. simple as that. Instead the response is: he is still leading McCain in ALL polls. History shows (past 3 elections) that the younger voters pay attention late. we are 90 days out, we still have a long way to go.

Sentence 1: Barely. Sentence 2: Wrong (the youth vote help him defeat Hillary) Sentence 3: no. we don’t have a long way to go. This race should be over. Hell. It shouldn’t even be a race. But it is. And Obama’s delay/difficulty in selecting a candidate shows just how much this is so and what a critical juncture his campaign is at. That is why, rather than beat the Olympics with a VP choice, he is letting it go down to the wire. He will likely announce on the 24th, just one day before the convention. That is odd, shows a lack of confidence in his choices and leaves little time for convention planning and hitting the campaign trail with a plan.

  30. anon says:

he had a tendency to coast and he lost several key states to her.

She went 8 for 8 in the big states and 8 for 10 in the swing states against him, and lost Missouri by just 1 point. Therin lies Obama’s problem. Winning those states. The other VP candidates may help him win one. The sad news for the left is, the only candidate that assures Obama the White House is Hillary. Must be a painful acknowledgement for Obama. Another reason why he hasn’t made his choice. He knows putting her on puts him in, leaving her off puts him at risk AND even if he wins a close election without her, he goes in wounded without a landslide win and without consensus.

  31. pandora says:

    In your opinion…

    Why compete with the Olympics?

  32. he beat the clintons, he doesn’t need her to win now. That logic makes no sense. He is ahead in every poll and the independents don’t make up their minds till after the convention. Which is when the end game begins.

Rest up and get ready for the fight. It isn’t going to be Hillary.
