DNREC keeps a list of local (mostly) contractors for a range of technologies.

Call your neighbors first and run your plans by them, and after you have your estimates you can let them know what portion they’ll be paying for …

The 1st thing I’d do is improve efficiency (windows, doors, insulation etc.) before bothering with things like Solar.

  9. Col. Kurtz says:

If your home is in Delaware, knock it down and start over.

El Somnambulo recommends geothermal. It’s the whole enchilada.

A solar hot water heater would give you the biggest bang for your buck in DE. You would need a closed loop system. Next, I would suggest geothermal heating/ cooling, but I don’t believe that type of system can be installed in the city. Solar is ok for energy independence, but it will take a long time to recover your outlay even with rebates.

Delaware Renewable Energy Co. in Rehoboth on rt1, has a big solar array visible from the highway. Also, check out Shore Line Electrics rooftop residential windmill at their office behind Jiffy Lube on rt1 at Midway. That thing constantly spins like mad.

Hef–thanks for the question–I can’t believe all the “Kermit the Frog” answers. So much for doing a public interest spot…Does anyone besides Cassandra and Meatball have a real response? With energy prices the way they are, I bet the recovery time will be a lot less…and does anyone know if there is something “out there” on the forefront, that will be cost-effective anytime soon?
