The Real Money Figure…

…is cash on hand.

Yeah, yeah, Markell raised over $700,000 more than Carney.  But since Carney is having his expenses picked up by the Delaware Democratic Party (as Jason reported yesterday, the Del Dems have outspent Carney on Carney ads by nearly a margin of 2 to 1), I speculated earlier that that meant either Carney was not raising enough money and was basically broke, or it meant that he was just sitting on whatever money he did raise, letting the Del Dem’s ad buy keep him in the game against Markell’s until the last few weeks of the campaign.

It looks to me that the latter scenario is correct

Markell continues to lead the pack statewide with record-setting totals, including $1.1 million given to his campaign by 3,041 donors since the start of 2008. In his report Tuesday, Markell said he had spent $1.5 million so far this year, and has $2.1 million on hand for the four-week sprint to the Sept. 9 primary.

Carney reported spending $887,900, with $530,000 on hand.

So Carney has $530,000 in cash on hand for the last few weeks of the campaign.   Ordinarily he would be in good shape, and the plan to have the Del Dems pay for his ads in late July and early August would have looked to be a good idea.   But Carney is facing a fundraising machine in Markell.   Markell has $2.1 million in cash on hand for the final few weeks.   Now, I have heard that a union would be transferring a total of $500,000 to Carney.   I have no idea if this donation has taken place.  If it hasn’t, then Carney would then be at a 2 to 1 deficit in COH rather than a 4 to 1 deficit.

Also, the Carney campaign complaint that Jack Markell is trying to buy the election?   That won’t fly in Delaware where we have elected wealthy candidates time and again.  Remember Pete du Pont anyone?

  1. isn’t this crap that Carney is spewing very Rovian? It is pretty shitty that the guy currently Lt. Governor is saying these things.

Because we all know in politics that he who has the most money usually wins. So, he should have done a better job of raising it.

8 years of him and people are tired of it. Move on to Castle dumb ass

Regarding Markell’s war chest, you didn’t mention the disproportionate amount of out-of-state donors Markell has.

If your definition of being a “progressive” is having your election bought and paid for by people from Chicago, DC and New York, it is quite different than mine.

Maybe it is a good thing that the State party is helping Carney. At least it is Delaware money.

  3. Rebecca says:

The fact that Jack is respected nationally and can garner support from out of state is absolutely no indication that he’s not progressive. In fact, the opposite could be argued, he’s impressed people all over the country with his thoughtful solutions.

Lets see, Jack gets lots of $1200 checks from all over, including DC, Chicago, ya-da-ya-da. John gets a $500,000 dump from Delaware’s unions. Which one comes with strings attached?

  4. maybe all this money from out side the state is a good thing. People will come here to set up their tax free jobs…

    oh wait

  5. jason330 says:

I (heart) Nemsk, but he is all wet this time. Markell raised about $480,000 of his record breaking figure instate – which is more than Carney (sans porno mustache) raised across the entire good old U.S. of A..

…with all of his cronies pulling for him…
…with Del Dems pickign up the tab for radio and TV…

  6. nemski says:

    nemski no liksy markellski

No, I just want to know where I can buy a pair of Markell-colored glasses.

  7. selander says:

Nemski – Try the Shipyard Shops on the Riverfront. It’s one of the few businesses open there.

  8. jason330 says:

Selander I’m calling you out as a shill for the shipyard shops Markell-colored glass vending cabal.

Here is a description Markell supporters from this blog: he’s impressed people all over the country with his thoughtful solutions.

Here is a description of Carney supporters from this blog: all of his cronies pulling for him.

So Markell supporters are enlightened and Carney supporters are contemptible or worthless persons.

    Gee, thanks.

  10. jason330 says:

It is all good after the primary.

It is all good after the primary.

No sir, it’s not. I’m taking down names. 🙂

  12. Rebecca says:

    Nemski,

Just to clarify a point. We need unions. For the past 30 years we have been engaged in class warfare and gutting the unions has been a top priority for the conservatives because unions get in the way of the rich keeping it all. I’m all for strong legislation to protect unions and their members.

Having said that, the unions in Delaware are the 800-lb gorilla in the Democratic Party. They provide most of the money that gets Dems elected. And they provide a lot of manpower to volunteer for campaigns. This has given them a big club in Dover and in the party. And they don’t always use that club in the best interests of the rest of the state. For example, unions are opposed to Open Government, it would stiffle their ability to stack the deck.

It would be nice to level the playing field a bit. Jack looks like our best shot at that.

“Having said that, the unions in Delaware are the 800-lb gorilla in the Democratic Party. They provide most of the money that gets Dems elected. And they provide a lot of manpower to volunteer for campaigns. ”

Which is why Jack will need all of that 2.1 million. And even that may not be enough.

  14. tom says:

look through jack’s report online and tell me that all the $1000 – $1,200 out of state contributions don’t tell you something, out-of-state money buying your way into office. that’s how delaware next governor should be elected.

  15. MJ says:

Anyone notice that the Friends of John Carney and the Delaware First PAC have the same address? Hmmmm, think someone might be operating under the radar to try and boost his cash (now that he really needs it)?

  16. nemski says:

Hey, Markell’s finance report is not available for download.

    What’s Markell trying to hide?

  17. nemski says:

One hour later and Markell is still hiding his figures.

    What’s Markell trying to hide?

  18. Blarg says:

Nemski, I don’t know what the hell you are talking about, but Markell’s report has been available all day on the Dept. of Elections site.

    Guess who’s isn’t? Carney

  19. nemski says:

    Here’s Carney’s, http://www.delawareonline.com/assets/pdf/BL115508813.PDF

    Where’s Markell’s?

  20. Blarg says:

http://elections.delaware.gov/ under campaign finance. That’s where it had to be filed, that’s where it is filed. I don’t think TNJ’s lack of report-posting-abilities should be blamed on Markell.

  21. cassandra_m says:

Oh no — please don’t tell me that nemski is having router issues, too!

  22. PBaumbach says:

If that doesn’t work, go to http://elections.delaware.gov/information/campaignfinance/cf_forms.shtml
and choose View Finance Report on the left, then choose Candidates, and then choose 2008, and then look up the candidate you want by last name. Note that there are two Markell reports–the second one is Jack’s campaign–the first one is the Friends of Jack Markell entity.

  23. nemski says:

Tomorrow during “work”, I’ll start converting Markell and Carney’s pdfs to Excel. It’s going to painful.

  24. John Manifold says:

Cash doesn’t vote. I’m trying to picture how Markell’s significant cash-on-hand erases Carney’s advantages.
