Moral Complicity

Steve D of the Booman Tribune has written a spectactular piece that nicely sums up my thoughts over the last few days after the cold blooded murder of Arkansas Democratic Leader Bill Gwatney.

Yet, after losing his job (or leaving it), the first action [Timothy Dale Johnson] decided to take was to murder a prominent liberal and Democrat, much like Jim David Adkisson decided to take his rage and anger at his personal situation out on the “liberal” church in Knoxville. Both chose to use firearms to murder innocent people they did not know personally. It is logical to assume that they both chose their targets to make a statement. Indeed, we know for a fact that Adkisson, the church shooter, wrote a specific hate filled manifesto detailing his reasons for targeting the most prominent “liberal” church in Knoxville for his massacre.

I don’t think it is a coincidence that within a few weeks, another disturbed individual who had lost his job … chose to shoot someone associated with “liberals” and “Democrats.” The right wing bloggers and talk show hosts can deny their complicity in these “random” actions, and, indeed, legally they are not responsible for the criminal actions of a few “rogue” individuals. However, their writings and commentary, widely disseminated on TV, radio and the internet, has spread a culture where violence against liberals, Democrats, feminists, gays, blacks, immigrants, Muslims and any other out group is frequently expressed as “comedy” or in fantasies of wish fulfillment. They can claim all they like that they cannot be held accountable for the aura of hatred they have engendered in American society, but their protestations ring hollow to me.

You Know Who Wants to Beat The Snot Out of Me & Donviti

I guess I touched a nerve.

# 5 Mark Says:

Jason:

I’ll tell you what I’ll do — you want the mission statement changed? You got it.

Here’s how it will work. You and I will have a nice, friendly little boxing match. Standard rules will apply, we’ll do it in a real boxing ring, standard weight gloves, all that. 3 x 2 minute rounds, with 1 minute between rounds.

If you beat me, not only will I change the mission statement I will make a maximum donation to the Markell campaign. You can even write the mission statement — anything you want, 100 words or less.

Let me know your availability and I will book the gym.

You have my e-mail address — give me a shout

Dude,

You can see how fat I am from that picture of me under the headline (that until recently read) “This man is a Coward.” Do I look like I could last more than a few minutes in a boxing ring against a macho man like you? Also, I have not been in a fight since 6th grade. I’m not boxing.

I have an idea, why not change the mission statement and add some disclosure because it is the right thing to do? Have you considered that?

So It’s Not Money That Grows On Trees?

According to repub Bill Sali, oil apparently does grow on trees. Or grow in trees. Or something not related to rock formations.

Anyway, somehow this repub — whose current claim to fame is in currently flashing his petticoats in the Drill Here Drill Now burlesque — has decided to upend every bit of geology discovered since James Hutton to declare that trees have more than 40 gallons of crude oil. Each.

And this guy is from Idaho — you’d think that he would know better. Just don’t tell him about rubber trees, though. He’ll have us carving up tree stumps Flintstones-style to put on our cars.

Leave your prediction of which of the Delaware local repubs will be first to take up this new bit comedy.

Is it Still Biden?

Tonight, we learn about who is speaking on Wednesday in less than two weeks:

The headline prime-time speaker on Wednesday will be Barack Obama’s Vice Presidential Nominee.

Former President Bill Clinton will speak on Barack Obama’s commitment to a stronger and safer America, as well as the history of Democrats making positive change in the lives of all Americans.

Governor Bill Richardson and Senators Evan Bayh, Joe Biden and Jay Rockefeller will echo Obama’s call for a new direction in national security and outline his policies and plans to secure America’s future.

One of the greatest security challenges facing  the country today is reducing our dependence on oil, especially from foreign sources.  Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid will discuss Barack Obama’s plans to make America more secure by investing in smart energy policies.

Senator Ken Salazar, the Convention’s home state Senator, and House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn will also speak as part of the Securing America’s Future program.

A bedrock component of Obama’s national security plan is increasing our support to active duty military, veterans and military families.  Representative Patrick Murphy (D-PA) and Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth will lead a tribute honoring those who give so much to secure our nation’s future.

In the parlor game that is the Vice Presidential nominee sweepstakes, it has been an assumption that if a person is scheduled to speak at the convention, then that person is no longer under consideration for the ticket.  That was everyone said when Hillary Clinton was given her own night to shine on Tuesday.

So, if we continue with that assumption, favorite son Joe Biden appears to be no longer in consideration to be VP, for he is now scheduled to speak.   Who is left that is not scheduled to speak?

Breaking: “High Minded Policy Blogger” on Carney Campaign Payroll

I don’t want to link to this guy’s shit ass blog, but check out page 102 of this Carney financial disclosure form.

That’s $2,190 paid (twice) to Mr. Mark J. Fraud who claims to be a blogger, but is really an astro-tuff operation funded by John Carney.

I wish I could make four grand blogging. Oh, but then I’d have to pretend that I was an independent policy wonk.

Nevermind.

Bottom Line: I don’t mind that Carney has a campaign blog set up – but that he tried to pass it off as an objective policy blog pisses me right off.

Happy Birthday Social Security

73 years ago today, FDR signed the law that created the Social Security program. This pay-as-you-go (as designed, where younger workers pay for the older ones) program has been not only one of the most popular, but also one of the most effective programs in the history of the US. John McCain thinks that it is a disgrace:

The Troops hate McCain. (Why should they be any different?)

Think Progress by way of Eschaton:

Obama has received nearly six times as much money from soldiers deployed overseas. Even anti-war libertarian Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), who has suspended his campaign, has received more than four times as much as McCain.

Outside of his base in the traditional media and the 38% of Republicans who would vote for Satan (R) if he was matched up against Jesus (D) nobody likes John McCain.
