VP Announcement Thread #2

Filed in National by on August 22, 2008

I was outside Joe Biden’s house this morning.    Crazy press scene, but no Biden or Biden clan sightings.   Stupid me, but I forgot my camera.   Anyway, here is the information I have gathered online and from some of the scuttlebutt among the press in Montchanin:

  • Obama has called most of his long and short list.   Hillary Clinton has NOT been called. Joe Biden has NOT been called.
  • The “news” of Clinton not being vetted is old news.   It was reported by the New York Times back in June.  That is why until this week, she was never mentioned as being on the short list.  Indeed, I don’t think she needs vetting, as her campaign so often mentioned.
  • Evan Bayh has NOT been called.
  • It is being reported by Ambinder and Halperin that everyone associated with Joe Biden have “gone to ground.”
  • Ambinder reports that some Bayh folks think Biden’s the guy, while Virginia Democrats still do not think Kaine will be chosen.

This means the decision is down to Biden and Clinton, in my view.   Looks like Biden is the choice to me, but who knows.

UPDATE: Rumor has it that Obama’s choice may not be told he or she is the pick until after the text message goes out.  This is being done in order to prevent anyone of the pick’s families, friends, or staff from leaking it or doing something that gives a clue.

  1. top ten things a stalker says:

was outside Joe Biden’s house this morning.

    ding, ding, ding

number 1 answer on the board

  2. delawaredem says:

And I just saw a Carney “I cured cancer” ad on CNN, paid for by the Del Dems.

So now they are buying TV ads for the mustache free.

  3. delawaredem says:

Hahaha. Yes, I did feel like a stalker.

  4. pandora says:

Best news… Bayh has not been called.

I don’t hate the guy, but he’s just so bla-y-h.

  5. Benjamin says:

Hum. With all due respect, how does the fact Clinton has never been vetted lead you to conclude she is the final two ?
I would argue that means SHE WAS NEVER IN CONTENTION despite the rumors and the wishful thinking.
And what do the NYT piece and the fact the Politico re-reported the not-vetting thing again tell you about the state of the relationship between the two sides really are ?
They are still leaking embarassing stuff about each other.
Hardly a good way to start a ticket.

  6. Benjamin says:

Pandora: Fact Bayh has not been called means he has not been written off yet.
He is calling them to tell them NO

  7. delawaredem says:

No, it means that he has not been called to tell him that he is NOT the pick. Thus he remains in contention.

The scuttle butt is that Kaine was told he was not the pick on Thursday, and those who know Kaine say he wore his disappointment in his body language later that day in a press conference.

  8. delawaredem says:

    Ben…

By not officially vetting her, Obama can surprise later by picking her.

  9. cassandra_m says:

The NJ Notes that that the police were called to the house this AM, which has got to be a direct consequence of DD’s stalking today.

Stirring up the hornet’s nest over at dKos yesterday, the cops coming out today — DD, you are just Trouble…

  10. Benjamin says:

    Come on delawaredem.

Since when do people pick candidates that have not been vetted ? Come on now.

  11. delawaredem says:

Ben, I am just telling you it is possible. And who knows if these staffers from the Obama and Clinton campaigns are even being straight with us.

  12. liberalgeek says:

Benjamin – are you saying that Hillary Clinton could have a secret that hasn’t come out in 9 years with Bill running and being President and a 2 year campaign to become President herself? What do you want? A body cavity search?

  13. delawaredem says:

Yeah, personally, I don’t think Hillary needs vetting.

  14. Wilmington says:

There’s a group getting together at around 6pm at Dead President’s in Wilmington to celebrate
    Biden as veep.

  15. delawaredem says:

If it is Biden, I will be there. With my laptop and all.

  16. Wilmington says:

Great! Hope to see you there

  17. Benjamin says:

I am telling you there are plenty of things that would need to be looked into .

Did you read Vanity Fair in June ? Now, before you say these are unsubstianted rumors, may I remind you so was Rielle Hunter back in October ?
We don’t know anything about the donors to the Presidential library. We don’t know anything about the exact relationship between Bill and Gupka.
I am not saying there is something there. I am saying no Presidential candidate is going to wager the elction on trusting any potential VP, even less the Clintons. Period.
THAT IS WHAT VETTING IS ABOUT. It is about checking everything checks out. Not trusting ANYBODY’s word.

I am not arguing the validity of whether he SHOULD pick her. That’s another discussion. I am saying you guys are mistaking your own hopes for what is likely. Yoy may think he should. Fair enough. But he won’t and this piece in the paper – the mere fact it was leaked today – illustrates that the common sense instinctive position that he would not is confirmed. It could all be a headfake and she may have been vetted but quite frankly there is no point in doing that headfake a few hours before the reveal.

For some reason, both haters or lovers of Hillary seem to completely lose touch with common sense when they discuss her. It is troubling.

  18. liberalgeek says:

If it is Biden, I’ll be at Dead Presidents also. Hear that Joanne?

  19. liberalgeek says:

I don’t hope that it’s Hillary. I just think that she has been more thoroughly vetted by the nation than any person that has ever sought any office.

  20. liberalgeek says:

    Nice. I’ve been Rick-rolled.

  21. FSP says:

And you’ve blown it for everyone else….

  22. Benjamin says:

And liberalgeek, we will never know this but I guarantee you that’s not true.

Back in April, they were still finding out stuff about her past (her attacking a 12yo rape victim on the stand as a lawyer) that noone knew about and she had been around for twenty years.
And Bill … Sorry but as much as I am inclined to believe Hillary is clean, I don’t believe it about Bill for a second. And once again, I don’t know what is true and what is not, but that Vanity fair piece raises questions that have not been answered. And that the National Enquirer would have been happy to answer had she been on the ticket.

  23. DPN (poster formerly known as nemski) says:

If it is Biden, I’ll be at Dead Presidents also

If it is Biden, it should be Buckley’s. You guys from out-of-state or what?

  24. Benjamin says:

Earlier in the week, I think jason was asking how a Biden pick would play out nationally.
One clue from observing the past few days : lots and lots and lots of jokes about hairplugs.

  25. liberalgeek says:

I agree about Bill. Like I said, I’m not pulling for Hillary, but I’m not particularly concerned about an Eagleton moment with her.

  26. Wilmington says:

Buckley’s instead? DP is a great political place though…

  27. Benjamin says:

There is a whole lot of space between Eagleton and just a succession of minor embarassments – or a huge one a la Rielle.

I have said it before and I will say it again. Were it to be just Hillary, I would enthusiastically welcome her on the ticket. But she has CHOSEN to surround herself with the biggest collection of untrustworthy scumbags and douchey morons ever collected by a single campaign (from Bill to Lanny to Terry) and quite frankly since she is a package deal, I don’t want her anywhere near the ticket – and trust me, neither does Barack.

  28. Benjamin says:

Another reason he cannot pick Hillary : her debt.
If she gets on the ticket, immediatly, Obama’s advantage over McCain is gone because they have to pay back her debt.

  29. Truth Teller says:

if he wants to win Ohio and Florida he better pick her or the Senile Old man will beat him in November. Wake up folks the idea here is to win. So all you Obama supporters keep up your trashing of the Clinton’s and lose this election. Remember politics isn’t bean bag

  30. Love DP. May show up if I don’t fall asleep in a post-excitement haze.

  31. Wilmington says:

Yeah – we’re doing DP. 6pm. Be there. Celebrate some Delaware history.

We can always do buckley’s later or Wednesday for the VEEP speech.

  32. cassandra_m says:

Benjamin is really right here — the whole not vetted thing may be a headfake, but one of the Clintonistas made a big deal about saying she wasn’t being vetted back in late June (Lanny Davis?).

The notoriously leaky and self-absorbed HRC staff, spending a month or more reliving all of Bill’s greatest hits via the press and — i think — picking Hillary makes him look beholding to the PUMAs. And I can’t imagine any man on the planet having to live with that.

  33. delawaredem says:

    Truth Teller,

I am an Obama supporter and I am not trashing her. Neither is Benjamin. You Clinton supporters need to stop with your bitterness and your sensitivity. Criticism and critique is not trashing her. Indeed, I will be happy with her as VP. But all is not lost if she is not. She and her husband are not the end all be all of Democratic or American politics. They are not the saviors of humankind. They are great politicians. That is all.

Jeez, and whose campaign’s supporters are cultist?

  34. liz allen says:

Thinkin its not Biden….the key word is “great on economics”, huh that wouldnt be Biden. But it might be Hilary! Don’t really think so, I say its a major surprise where we will go WOW!

Put Hil on the Supreme Court, leave Biden where he is, Bayh is a neo con dem, no change there. Caine and the others have no real foreign policy experience or economic experience….its a SURPRISE!

  35. liz allen says:

OH, Dead Presidents! I personally like the place but lets not put a negative on this campaign. just kidding.

  36. Joanne Christian says:

Sorry Geek–I was out of town…no DP, no Buckley’s, no Taco Bell….
