Unity at the Jamboree

Joe Biden’s selection at Obama’s running mate, a first in Delaware history and a proud moment for all Delaware Democrats if not all Delawareans, prompted a show of excitement and unity at the annual Jamboree down at Cape Henlopen in Lewes.

Obama’s announcement defused and overshadowed the potential tension in a state party facing its toughest gubernatorial primary ever, a contest that already has drawn a record $5 million in contributions.

Instead, the picnic tables and pavilion were a sort of demilitarized zone. At least for Saturday.

….

“This is a great day for Delaware Democrats — I can’t remember a day like today,” [John Carney] said. “This is Joe Biden’s event. I was just talking to someone in a Markell T-shirt and we were saying, ‘Isn’t this great? This changed the whole event to Joe Biden for vice president.’ ”

….

[During Markell’s speech, he] called Carney and Carper to the stage. [….] “We’re talking about all we have in common,” Markell said, as Carney pointed out that all were wearing the same light-blue shirts. “Folks, here we are.”

Others facing primaries — those running for Congress and insurance commissioner — were on hand. But no axes would emerge on this day.

“It wasn’t just the absence of negativity,” said Matt Denn, who is running for lieutenant governor. “They went out of their way to be positive. Today was about Joe Biden. … I thought this would be a great year for Democrats anyway. But if any Democrat was even thinking of not voting in November, they’re coming out now.”

I was really bummed that I couldn’t go this year.   I was looking forward to going for the expected fireworks among the rival Markell and Carney camps, as well as from those supporting the candidates for Congress and Insurance Commissioner.   And then Joe Biden had to go and get selected as our next Vice President and ruin everything.

House Divided Speech: Joe Biden or Abraham Lincoln?

House Divided — Text of Entire Speech by President Lincoln, 1868

MONEY QUOTE FROM ABE WAS: “We shall not fail – if we stand firm, we shall not fail.”

But Joe Biden’s speechwriter’s relayed it a bit differently:

JOE: INTRO: Well, it’s great to be here! On the steps of the old State House in the land of Lincoln. President Lincoln once instructed us to be sure to put your feet in the right place. Then stand firm. Today, Springfield, I know my feet are in the right place. And I am proud to stand firm for the next president of the United States of America, Barack Obama.

JOE: END OF HIS SPEECH : “And now it’s time for all of us, as Lincoln said, to put our feet in the right place and to stand firm.”

Only Lincoln never said it is time to put our feet in the right place. He said: “We shall not fail — if we stand firm, we shall not fail.”

Speechwriter taking liberties? No biggie! But let the record show:

BUT ABE NEVER SAID IT EXACTLY THAT WAY……

  2. do you feel better now that you got that off your chest?

That was cool Markell and Carney could get together.

I was there. The Carney people have wasted so much money on crap (visors, little flags, ‘The Carney Chronicle,” – that’s why they don’t have any money for advertising. Supposedly the Carney camp paid for people to be there – not just buying their ticket, but actually paying them to be there.

Snide looks were traded amongst the volunteers, but otherwise, it was civil. The food sucked (the 35th RD thinks that burgers and hotdogs is worth $20/pp – The 14th RD served fried chicken, ham, and all the trimmings last year for the same price – guess you need gay men to make these types of arrangements. LOL).

Miller got most of the story wrong – it was Jack who pointed out that everyone was wearing the same uniform (Jack, Minner-lite and Mr. Burns, I mean Sen. Carper). There were also a few other errors, but then again, it is the snooze journal.

And it couldn’t be lost on people that future Speaker of the House Pete Schwartzkopf was sporting a huge Markell sticker on his shirt. All of the other RD’s in Sussex are represented by the GOP.

    And where was Carney’s wife?

“The Carney people have wasted so much money …”

Markell poured it down the sewer with those vanity ads on Channels 3, 6 and 10.

  6. Yeah, but at least he’s got a million more where that came from…your boy Carney would have been up shit’s creek had the Democrats not paid for his shit.

I think this was the agenda for the day…
