I guess the line of thinking being if you’re gonna get the penalty then you might as well make it worth it?

Personally, I don’t think so. Nobody wants to give the other team an easy 15 yards and doing so repeatedly is a good way to get yourself benched. Not to mention, if you do pull off something obviously violent the league might slap you with a fine as well. Not that millionaires generally care about a couple thousand dollar fine, but you never know – it is one less piece of jewelry to add to their collection.

No because the 5 yard variety only was applied if the defender touched the facemask or grab it but immediately let it go.

To say that the rule change would result in more violent facemasks doesn’t make sense since a 15 yard penalty would be called irregardless if there were a 5 yard option or not.

If the foul is flagrant enough, the referee can eject a player. So to answer your question, no.

I would take advantage of this new rule and get my money’s worth. They should give grades for the best facemasking of the week. If I could I would have Tony Romo looking out his ear hole.

Sometimes I’m lax….and right you are!

    …lay off the pipe.

  6. If facemasks are outlawed, only outlaws will have facemasks.

I say go retro, no facemasks.

I know personally when I played you would feel shame with this type of penalty. However, these guys these days do a great job of popping off helmets like a beer cap, kudos to them!
