Miserable Failure

Filed in National by on October 7, 2008

Okay. Here is the local slant. George Bush has killed the DE GOP, which is a good thing. Now we have to plan for how to run this one party state.

Note that 55% of repubs still support him (down from 61%). Must be those smart pills.

no kissing Jason’s ass…you don’t want to go there anyway. I’m doing you a favor

The new Dem majorities are a major risk for the Dems, and mis-handling it could easily be the spark for a revived GOP.

But Delaware has the advantage of not only getting more Democrats, but better Democrats (Markell, Denn, probably others I am leaving out).

The question is, how will Markell reform the party? How completely will he purge the Minnerites and the Daniellio crowd? How hard will they fight back? Will Thurman Adams lose his chair? Will he be replaced by a clone?

The Republican pro-business Chamber of Commerce platform has always been brain-dead, consisting simply of giving corporations everything on their laundry list, and busting unions and wages whenever they have the opportunity.

The challenge for Democrats is to deliver a smart Democratic pro-business agenda that meets the needs of the whole state as well as its corporations.

Great points. Some Dem newbies are no real improvement over the old school Dems but a great improvement over the Republican incumbent. (See Brad Bennett v. Donna Stone)

Within the framework of a smart Democratic pro-business (in a new green energy jobs sort of way) agenda – you reduce the chances that a guy like Brad Bennett will turn out to be a screw up.

Dems have to get a handle on schools too. If we keep going down the same path, education will always be the club the GOP beats us with.

Any school solution has to start with decreased class size, which means hiring more teachers – a lot more. Sure, fire some admins too – ask the GOP for a list.

Republicans meanwhile are dicking around with vouchers and charter schools, while avoiding any solution that would create more DSEA members. They have got nothing for education, so it is up to us Dems to get out of our own way and get a fix under way before the next major election cycle.

There are way too many Dems who are no better than Republicans on education, saying “Fuck it, my kid is in a private school (or Charter) anyway.”

One-party government generally doesn’t last long.

The opposition may not build itself back up quickly to challenge for dominance, but the cracks in the one party start to show fairly quickly when there is no opposition.

Historical example: the post-Watergate GOP, which was back in power within eight years.

  7. pandora says:

I agree, Steve. I generally like the balanced power model. Perhaps if the Republican party crashes and burns this time around they’ll rebuild in a better way. My advice to republicans: Get rid of the far right.

  8. Tom S. says:

One party rule blows. Look at any state that is dominated by one party and tell me it doesn’t have problems because of it.

Competition builds better government, I don’t want Delaware going the way of New Jersey and you shouldn’t either.

Taxes are going to have to go up, so when the DE GOP runs against us in 2012 as tax-hikers, we need to be able to say:

“Yes, but we increased graduation rates, increased SAT scores, decreased crime rates, decreased infant mortality, decreased cancer rates and mortality, decreased poverty, rebuilt the state rainy day fund, preserved open space, etc…”

Of course not all of that is achievable in 4 years, but if we can’t show some of it, then the GOP will eat our lunch, and the same miserable cycle will start all over again.

Remember in 2012, Dems will own the Delaware economy and must take responsiblity.

“Will Thurman Adams lose his chair? Will he be replaced by a clone?”

Who cares? He doesn’t run anything. He’s a more-or-less genial face for the thuggery of DeLuca, Blevins and their gang.

“Competition builds better government, I don’t want Delaware going the way of New Jersey and you shouldn’t either.”

New Jersey was quite competitive until just a few years ago; there is no particular reason it won’t be again.

But there are a few things we could learn from N.J. For example, the state has only 40 elections districts, though two reps are chosen from each for a total of 80 in the House. Seems a little silly that Delaware, with a population about 1/8 of New Jersey’s, needs 41.

Funny, I always thought the people owned the economy.

Nice twisty wordplay, but you know what was meant was “Dems will own the outcome of their economic policies.”

Are you sure you aren’t Mike W.?

    ouch…that was low 🙂

You aren’t kidding. Seriously, we can’t “get rid of them” in a literal sense. Varying viewpoints should be understood to create a true community. My contention is that they would love to expunge people like me from the party which is why the national-level totally sucks right now.

They’ve totally turned their backs on “The Party of Lincoln” and true “maverick” contributors like Edward Brooke.

If that graph tells you one thing it is that the 9/11 attacks were the best thing that ever happened to Bush.
