Lieberman’s second trip to the woodshed

Filed in National by on November 6, 2008

Harry Reid will be meeting today with Joe Lieberman. I’m not sure what will happen, but I sure know what I want to happen.  I want Lieberman stripped of his chairmanships, and I realize this may be viewed as cutting off my nose to spite my face.  Sorry, can’t help it.

I don’t trust Lieberman to caucus with the Democrats.  And why should I?  The man spoke out against Obama/Biden at the Republican Convention, for God’s sake.  He picked his side in the most public way possible.  And yes, he was entitled.  But what he’s no longer entitled to is his vaulted position within a party he fought to defeat.  Why on earth would I want him in a position of power?  Why would Democrats reward that sort of behavior?

That being said, I do hope Obama creates a bi-partisan administration.  My beef is with Lieberman, and Lieberman alone.  He made his choice.  Now he can live with it.

(And in case you’ve forgotten Lieberman’s first trip to the woodshed… here it is!)

    Wasn’t Harry a boxer? Just saying…

Anyway, Carper is next in line for Homeland Security Committee. Good – then Carper will be in the national spotlight where progressive bloggers with nothing to do after the election can take their best shots at him. Maybe that’s how we will wear him down for 2012.

Not much to say. Reid must take away the chairmanships and Lieberman hould not be caucusing with Democrats (period)

  3. nemski says:

I worried about Reid and Pelosi going rogue; they could damage any gains made by the Obama campaign very quickly.

My hope is that Reid has talked to President-elect Obama about his plans.

    AGREED

I’m not that worried about Reid and Pelosi. For now I think they’ll stay in line. To step out of line so soon could be dangerous politically. The Obama wave is pretty big. I doubt they’ll misbehave this soon after the election. And if they do, they might find themselves being ushered to the woodshed!

Lieberman appropriate punished the Democrats for attempted to politically destroy him. They should count themselves lucky and make peace with Joe. He taught them a good lesson.

A source with knowledge of the situation says that Reid will likely tell Lieberman that he is being stripped of his committee chairs

According to Jane Hampshire, via Eschaton…

My guess? Reid told him he can stay in the caucus if he steps down from his committee chairmanship (a campaign we started shortly after the 2006 election, thanks to everyone who participated with pitchforks and torches). I imagine Reid told him they’ll wait to do anything until the other Senate races are decided, but that’s the way it’s going to go down. Those are the rather well-source rumors circulating, anyway.

Joe now goes to see if he can get a better deal from the GOP, knowing his chances of winning in Connecticut as a Republican in 2012 are about “zero.”

I hope Lieberman retires in 2012. If he’s getting stripped of his chairmanships, that’s just too bad for him. He chose his path, and now he has to bear the consequences.

Somehow I remember hearing Lieberman saying he was planning to retire after this term expires (probably to run off to be a Big Pharma or Insurance lobbyist).

I do hope that Joe loses his committees.

Just heard a report on NPR that Lieberman and Reid are to meet with more Dems in a couple of weeks to talk out his options. Lieberman told the media present that he had a couple of weeks to think out what his options would be.

I do hope Harry Reid gave him an offer he can’t refuse.

One more — Jane Hamsher over at FireDogLake still has her Just Say No To Joe Petition up. Sign it if you want to Joe to lose his leadership positions.

What are you saying here? Are you suggesting that the congressional leadership must lay down and be lap-dogs for the incoming president?

The Huffington Post is reporting that in their meeting today, Reid told Lieberman that he had to step down from his position as chair of the Homeland Security Committee if he remained in the Democratic Caucus. Lieberman did not accept this offer, which means that his only redress is to go around Reid and petition the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee to keep his seat.

We’ve watched for years as Joe called war opponents traitors, lied about wanting to bring the troops home to get elected, stabbed Democrats in the back and did everything he could to keep Barack Obama out of the White House. Lieberman laundered smears that even McCain wasn’t willing to launch himself.

    No way.

Make no mistake about it — Lieberman was openly threatening the Democratic Caucus in his press conference today.

    Enough is enough.

Please sign the petition to the Steering and Outreach Committee, telling them it’s time for Joe to go.
