Doctor Who

Filed in National by on November 23, 2008

I tried, I really tried to get into Doctor Who, but I failed. Now don’t get me wrong, I am a big TV/book science fiction fan from the original Star Trek through Star Wars (I saw it 13 times in 1977) to the recent Battlestar Galatica TV series. But something about Doctor Who never stuck. In was on this date in 1963 that the BBC broadcast the first Doctor Who episode.

Actually, I tried also. The guy with the scarf was interesting the times I watched with him. Just as I was getting into it, they killed him off.

The best description I ever heard of Dr. Who in the sixties and seventies was “Star Trek without the money”. I totally fell for every lousy special effect and outlandish plot. Tom Baker will always be, for me, the defining Doctor. I have many fond memories of surfing remote UHF channels or staying up late to watch PBS in hopes of seeing an episode I might have never seen before. This combination of bad sci-fi and B-movies made for TV became an artform. It was (and still is) magic.

Dr. Who is one of the finest tv series ever made. Thank you for recognizing an international milestone.

I am deeply ashamed to admit – and sincerely hope Cassandra forgives me – but I have never seen a Doctor Who episode.
