Deliberate Incompetence
I have reached the conclusion that the last eight years weren’t the stumblings of an incompetent frat boy, but rather, a deliberate effort to bring our country to its knees. I believe what we are witnessing is the Republican version of Tough Love – which might be more accurately described as spousal abuse, as in… I beat the crap out of you for your own good.
And while I understand the ideology behind the capitalistic approach to the auto bailout, I find the Republican handling of the situation deliberately myopic. Our entire economy is collapsing and Republicans are focusing on making an example out of one failing sector.
Why? Why risk turning this recession into a depression? It can’t be about winning elections because if the auto industry crashes, taking down millions of jobs and other business sectors as well, Republicans will own this devastation. So is it simply ideology? Is it simply some mythical belief that the Phoenix will rise from the ashes bringing with it the rise of new capitalism as well as the rebirth of the GOP?
Have Republicans embraced the Sodom and Gomorrah model of government?

The goal is to help the auto makers survive for the long term?
if that is so, a bridge loan will not work, it will offer false hope at best.
A fundamental restructuring should have begun with government DIP financing over a month ago.
This issue has nothing to do with talking points or any party it has to do with prosperity, workers deserve that chance.
Pandora, your conclusion is correct… unfortunately, it was all ratified by the voters and the Congress. It is our neighbors who have done this to America. Bush represents the worst of us, and there are far too many “worst of us.”
I do think that sinking the auto bailout was less about capitalism than it was about trying to torpedo the UAW. Which was interesting, since some repubs objected to the “Auto Czar” for making the government too responsible for the day to day ops of these organizations; but were delighted to try to negotiate worker (just workers, mind you) wages with the UAW. They’re even hypocrites about micromanaging.
The structural incompetence of the Republicans is a failure to note that ideology ≠ governing. But while they’re smart about campaigning and the politics of personal destruction — they have yet to provide any deep rooted demonstration of governing competence.
I think the Republican plan was to raid the Treasury, float the economy on debt, and let the crash start on the next President’s watch so Democrats could take the blame.
They came pretty close.
And speaking of letting Democrats take the blame: I would love to see a national poll to see how many people think Obama is the President already.
Look not only have the Repuks attempted to wreck havoc upon this country since 1994 but they now have seemed to have reached that goal. I just can’t believe that they would do it at American Workers expense while aiding Japan, Germany and korea. But I guess that is why the Repuks from the South do it after all they betrayed this country before.
“But I guess that is why the Repuks from the South do it after all they betrayed this country before.”
That’s gonna leave a mark.
I think some of them really believe in their ideology and so think they’re doing the right thing. I think others think that it won’t hurt their state, so it’s ok if it hurts other ones.
I have reached the conclusion that the last eight years weren’t the stumblings of an incompetent frat boy, but rather, a deliberate effort to bring our country to its knees.
Why can’t it be both?
Could be both, but I sensing a plan. Bust Unions, destroy public education, let the economy crash, endless war combined with endless debt, etc.
For your poll, can I throw shoes at all of them? I have plenty.
Adjust your tin foil hat… as much as I like to subscribe to conspiracy theories, I don’t think this was that in depth.
I seriously think this economic collapse was the result of poor decisions made without a long term look at consequences, combined with the sheep-like consumer spending trends, combined with unfettered greed and the need for quarter-to-quarter profits instead of longer term corporate stability.
It was like a perfect storm of greed, stupidity, short-sightedness, and poor decisions made by all levels of the economy. From the White House and Capital Hill down to Joe Sixpack with every player in between.
This is just another part of the GOP’s long-standing stance on reversing New Deal and Great Society programs/policies, along with subsequent benefits derived there of…
Bu$hCo’s policy from day-one in Jan. 2001, was to back a Brinks truck up to the treasury and “get their money back”! 9/11 was an excuse; Iraq was an excuse; de-regulation (Wall Street, EPA, Big Phama and Ag) was an excuse….
The rich got wealthier while the rest experienced contraction, right?
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
…but it’s only a complete victory if the unions are busted.
I’m not sure Brian. There’s too much of it’s nobody’s fault in your explanation. I think you’re partially right – that there’s plenty of blame to go around, but I think the policies of Bush and the Republicans made things much, much worse. The people I look at are people like Phil Gramm and Alan Greenspan who had a free market dogma and oversaw massive deregulation.
Maybe I’m judging Bushco on their lack of serious response to any crisis. It’s as if they’re saying… let it (insert any crisis here – Katrina, Iraq, Auto Industry, Healthcare, economy, education, etc.) crash and burn.
oh and if it is deliberate incompetence than conservatism and free market economics will work if they get the right guy in there…
so,lets steer away from that one
You can’t expect people who think government is the problem to know how to govern, but you can expect them to destroy the government as much as possible. In this pursuit, they have been a smashing success.
Pandora,
I have come to soemthing of the same conclusion.
Bush is the Manchurian President, there is no way his absolute fucked-upedness is an accident.
Someone figured out how to totally fuck America sideways and they used Bush to do it.
Yup, no accident. I’m so angry I could throw a shoe!
I’m so angry I could throw a shoe!
Love it!!!!!!
