Why am I not surprised?

I want to say I’m surprised, but I guess I shouldn’t be.  They run us into the ground and then…ah forget it

WASHINGTON — In a swift victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved a historically huge $819 billion stimulus bill Wednesday night with spending increases and tax cuts at the heart of the young administration’s plan to revive a badly ailing economy. The vote was 244-188, with Republicans unanimous in opposition despite Obama’s pleas for bipartisan support.

Republicans are against economic recovery. I’m glad we got that straight.

  2. jason330 says:

Fuck Mike Castle. He is dead to me.

  3. anonone says:

Jason, he burned you. Don’t hold back any more. What was the “apology”?

  4. jason330 says:

Now we just have to convince Tom Carper.

  5. You know what cracks me up? I remember many Democrats caving to GOP economic bullshit in Bush’s first term. Many Dems compromising with the GOP-led gov’t.

What we now know is that what Bush and Congressional GOPers did (with the help of many Democrats) did not work. As fucked up and risky as Obama’s plan is, I’m willing to give it a chance because it doesn’t simply reward the rich with tax cuts and assume that they’ll invest in jobs and economic growth to “trickle-down” to the middle and lower classes.

  6. jason330 says:

I agree with all of that plus the transexual beauty pageants are going to be awesome.

  7. Not Brian says:

    Transexual beauty pageants?

I am regretting my vote for Nader!

    I’m livid.

  9. Shoe Throwing Instructor says:

How could we possibly expect republicans to vote for something that gives affordable health care to the unemployed when they are totally opposed to affordable health care for people with jobs and their children as well. Plus there was no provision to pay workers third world wages, we are asking to much from a party that hates the average american worker with a passion.

  10. Pres Obama got what he wanted and now he will have to live with it. Best wishes.

Bottom line, the bill had way too much non stimulus in it and a lot of things which would not matter to the economy.

The bill was over 300 pages long and supports state governments which have increased spending more than 120% in the last ten years and added long term debt at a rate of 90% in the last ten years.

The bill would have added $35,000 to my share of the national debt.

By the way, 11 Dems voted against it also.

  11. Truth Teller says:

Time for Obama and Joe to take off the gloves lets start passing all the bills we want . We either do it now or it won’t get done fuck the repuks don’t even allow any of their input they don’t have any ideas anyway. We now know who heads their party that Unamerican Junkie. We would be fools to consider any input from them now

  12. jason330 says:

Agreed TT. Mike Protack and the rest of the clueless Republican America haters are on the wrong side of history.

    Good riddance.

  13. Unstable Isotope says:

If the bill has too much non-stimulus it is because Obama accommodated Republicans.

  14. pandora says:

Republicans are betting the farm on Obama failing. It’s all or nothing, and if the people are still with Obama come 2012 the Republicans will have nothing.

BTW, this public support isn’t limited to the economy. The Republicans have to turn the people against everything Obama. They’ve been trying this tactic for a year, and it’s backfired every time. Talk about rolling the dice!

  15. Shoe Throwing Instructor says:

Mike I assume you are aware that state governments across the country are in dire straits, the state of california is sending out I.O.U. instead of tax returns and state workers have had their salarys cut back to minimum wage, but none of this concerns you because you are only concerned about yourself, human suffering only needs to be addressed if it`s your own, is that written into the republican platform?

  16. liz says:

The State of Delaware is going to cut EVERYTHING. The Voice of the Voiceless cant find their voice. The only people safe in this state are the state workers….no cuts there.

Republicans do not care about the economy, or lost jobs, lost homes, lost futures….they only care about the election 2 years from now, and being able to “blame Obama for the Bush world wide failures”. These people are not interested in helping the country get out out of the mess they created, only interested in power and getting back power.

Why Obama thinks he has to “get them on board” is ridiculous. When they had all three houses, they locked the doors to the democrats, wouldnt let them attend any of the meetings.

Thinking he can bring them around is naive, he doesnt need them. He needs to put his plans together and move ahead. I will agree there is not nearly enough money in the package to change anything. Its like bailing out the titantic with a shot glass.

  17. Rebecca says:

Its like bailing out the titanic with a shot glass . . . Good metaphor Liz!

As long as there is a Republican party it will always be thus. But it seems as though they are determined to self-destruct so maybe after 2010 things will be better. By then they should be able to hold their caucus in a broom closet.

  18. Dana says:

So, if Republicans happen to disagree with something put forward by Democrats, voting against der Führer makes them “spoiled rotten babies?” I wonder: how many times did you criticize the Democrats for being “spoiled rotten babies” when they voted against something President Bush proposed?

Even The New York Times said:

But estimating how effective the huge program of tax cuts and spending will be in getting America’s economic engines humming again is a far more complex calculation requiring almost line-by-line scrutiny of the 647-page bill, lawmakers, economists and policy analysts say.

Yet you are criticizing Republicans who had concerns about this huge stimulus package, rushed through with probably no one actually reading (or understanding) the thing as being “spoiled rotten babies.”

  19. Dorian Gray says:

So the $400 checks were OK. The subsequent $1200 checks were OK. $700B to help banks shore up they’re balances sheets. OK.

But this is where they draw the line. Nice.

  20. dana,

I will let the buck stop somewhere else, I don’t need you and the rest of the GOP finding a pair of balls while a Dem is in office. I’d rather them have done it 12 months ago and beyond.

  21. Dana says:

Oh, I agree: President Bush and the Republicans should have spent less, a lot less, than they did. That huge Medicare prescription drug plan? Never should have happened. Any money spent on luxuries should have been cut. In that respect, they deserved to lose.

But the odd notion that because the Republicans way over-spent, the Democrats should make them look like pikers, is terrible.

All I’d need is one year as Tsar of All the Americas, as an absolute autocrat, and I could promise you both lower taxes and a balanced budget.
