Comment Rescue: Where’s The Cuts?

Filed in National by on February 13, 2009

Yesterday in response this news, “Markell and the Office of Management and Budget found an additional $27.4 million in state agency budgets that can be returned to the General Fund”

Al Mascitti was not impressed:

If you’ll recall, Markell said he thought he’d be able to trim 1 to 2 percent off the budget through these moves, which would have been $33 million minimum. He didn’t even reach that.

But I think Al is comparing the 1 to 2 percent efficiencies that a “top to bottom” review of state operations Markell promised in his campaign to basic belt tightening.

In other words, I think the 1 to 2 percent will be additional cuts once the audit of state operations is complete.

I’d still think that an honest review (which would mean eliminating some programs) could find more that the 1 to 2 %. I think it’s going to be interesting as we may be cutting State workers while the demand for State Services will be rising.
