Breaking: Mike Castle Slams Obama Speech
This morning Mike Castle slammed President Obama’s address to a joint session of congress saying that Obama has created a “mystical fund” to save banks.
The GOP loyalists stopped short of calling President Obama’s remarks the ravings of an economic “witch doctor” but it was clear that Castle has signed up to be a part of the current GOP smear campaign against Barack Obama intended to obstruct the nation’s economic recovery.
UPDATE NOTE: WDEL must have gotten some heat from Castle – because the posted version of the Frank Gerace report edits out Castle’s egergious “mystical fund” comments.

I missed that. I was at the “Y” this morning, watching the TV and none of that was on the closed-captioning I was reading. When did that come out?
Around 7:20
Right now the report is replaying…………..yup, he just used the “mystical fund” smear again.
Ah, I was in Wawa getting my post-workout coffee roll with extra glaze.
Damn, they have good coffee. Anyway, not to steal the thread…was it indisputably Castle? I only ask, because I am serious that what I saw on the closed captioning was complimentary towards the Prez’s speech. Yeah, he had caution, but it was very, very far from any criticism.
Oh, sheez. I just turned it off and missed it. I want to hear it. I will make it a point to listen to the 9AM update. In the meantime, I am ouuuuuuuta heeeeeere!
Has Castle looked at the polling on Obama’s speech now and that’s why he’s trying to walk back his statement?
Jason,
We have not heard from Castle’s office, nor would it matter if we did.
CHRIS!!! I hope you look back after using that baby wipe to handle Jason’s mess.
Any chance the 8:24 segment of the Talk Back can be podcasted for DL or something in general? Jason and I were talking and he missed the dualing blogger idiots (oh, that would be his rant and my bad Harry Kalas imitation) and it would be cool to get it. Plus, think of the free props from DL (until they don’t like something they hear).
We have not heard from Castle’s office, nor would it matter if we did.
By now they know what to do without being told.
RSmitty: Each day’s Talkback segment is posted on the WDEL.com podcast page.
anon (if that is indeed your real name): I don’t know what the problem is. NOTHING was changed. NOTHING was edited.
NOTHING was changed. NOTHING was edited.
OK, I’ll go check now….
I heard the news at 10 (I think) and heard that business about the Mystical Fund in the Castle clip. It seems that it is on air, but not part of the linked clip.
Hmmm… I love a mystery.
– Jason and Cassandra say the phrase was aired.
– Chris Carl says nothing was edited.
– The phrase cannot be found in the audio clip on the website.
Those words are true in any context.
Well, 11AM is rolling up.
But I do think that the clip that is being aired is materially different (not edited) than the one WDEL posted.
Each story written by a WDEL reporter is written three times – two different versions for radio and one version for the Internet. That’s where the discrepancy lies.
For instance, you may hear something on the radio at 8am and hear a different version of the same story at 9am, then hear the 8am version again at 10am. And the Internet version may be different altogether. Most of our reporters cut-and-paste a radio story and clean it up for the web, but some write new versions that are more web-centric.
I hope this solved the so-called mystery. Believe me: no conspiracy, no editing by Castle’s office, no editing on our behalf.
Gentlemen, start your tape recorders.

Smitty’s call into WDEL this AM is hilarious.
Don’t make me like you for that compliment!
LOL, Smitty!
Funny stuff RSmitty.
Funny.
So how does that work? People just call in and say stuff? Do you guys stay up all night working out the exact words you will say during the session?
Most of our reporters cut-and-paste a radio story and clean it up for the web, but some write new versions that are more web-centric.
Mike Castle has a reputation for being gentlemanly and above the partisan fray… now we must wonder if this image has been carefully cultivated with the assistance of a very small handful of media outlets.
If Mike Castle did in fact utter the phrase “mystical fund” that is highly newsworthy and not something that should be “cleaned up for the web.”
In fact it is worth several followup questions and is worth its own article. First of all, because it represents Mike Castle breaking from form. Mike Castle going on the offensive is news.
Secondly, he should be forced to explain his “mystical” comment in one or more followup questions. If Castle has a good explanation, fine. If he doesn’t, then he is ignorant of the economics behind the banking crisis – that is news (not to us, but to the WDEL audience certainly).
Cass…um…yeah. All night. I write it, reherse it, warm up the vocal chords. So sleepless, I am!
Yeah, right! Totally off-the-cuff for me. As for Jason, I am sure he does practice in the manner I described. You can’t do what he does without practice!
Practice?! We’re talkin’ ’bout PRACTICE?!
Sorry, couldn’t resist.
anon – if it was such a conspiracy to hide it, why is it broadcast on-air? Oy vey with the conspiracy theorists!
When I say “clean up,” I’m referencing taking out pronouncers (pro-NOUN-sers), taking out [audio/cut 1137] cues, inserting <a href=…. video cues, etc — NOT editing out controversial stuff.
C’mon. Nobody loves controversy more than us.
I guess the takeaway is – if I want politicians to be accountable for what they say on WDEL, I will have to record it myself and ask them personally.
Anon,
I’m not sure how you’ve come to that conclusion.
Chris – was the mysticism in the web version and/or did it prompt a follow-up? Those are valid questions, no?
I think the point is that if you want to hear the full version you have to actually listen to WDEL and not just download excerpts for free. That’s fair; it is a business after all.
liberalgeek,
Yes, those are valid questions. Frank Gerace wrote the story. I was not here when he conducted the interview or wrote the story. His e-mail is fgerace@wdel.com.
anon – if you look at the price of each of those “broadcast” mediums, posting it on the Internet is way cheaper than putting it over the air on AM and WSTW-HD3.
I don’t know if CC is actually thinking along these lines – but it occurs to me I am not reasonable to expect WDEL to put their best stuff online for free. Then why would anyone listen to the radio? If I want it, I should record it myself.
“Mystical fund” was a startling phrase coming from Castle though, for a number of reasons. It is worth some exploration. That is what blogs are for now, not corporate media.
As far as follow-up is concerned – if reporters get into the habit of asking tough follow -up questions, Castle might just stop returning their calls.
…or as Chris stated, ask the reporter who did this reporting and posting on his own.
This is like swatting at flies on a hot summer day…a big nuisence!
You can’t charge for content, asshole. Ask Salon.com how that went for them…
