Quote of the Day II

Filed in National by on March 31, 2009

Backstory: The University of Notre Dame has asked the President of the United States to give the 2009 Commencement Address and the wackos have gone wacko.

Over the first two months of his administration, Barack Obama has established himself as the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history. My alma mater [Notre Dame] should not be providing a platform for this president.

  1. Unstable Isotope says:

    It’s the new political correctness.

So, is the Catholic Church officially aligning itself with the Republican party?

  2. pandora says:

Hasn’t it always aligned with the Republican Party? Sorta snark, but not much. Vatican II seems like centuries ago and… Newt’s a catholic now! 🙂

  3. anon says:

Just a brief reality check here… Yes the wackos are going wacko, but the Church bylaws actually do prohibit allowing pro-choice Catholic politicians to speak at Catholic institutions.

I am Catholic and I don’t agree with it, but those are in fact the rules.

The rules, by the way, were written by Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict).

To understand Cardinal Ratzinger’s role with respect to John Paul II… imagine if Dick Cheney had become President.

  4. nemski says:

As a Catholic reporter pointed out, the grassroots weren’t upset when Gay-loving and mass murderer Dick Cheney spoke at Notre Dame.

  5. anon says:

And yes, the Vatican aligned itself intensely with the GOP in 1994… in June Bush showed up at the Vatican and said… “Some of the bishops are not with me…” And Cardinal Ratzinger answered the call.

  6. Unstable Isotope says:

Republican politicians that have violated other Catholic doctrines have been invited without a peep of protest – like George W. Bush who personally signed execution warrants. It only happens with Democratic, pro-life politicians oddly enough. Even pro-choice Rudy Giuliani speaks at Catholic schools.

  7. anon says:

You are logically and morally correct. But there is no Church rule against that. Opposition to abortion is like the Prime Directive for the Vatican.

  8. anon says:

I think Giuliani gets a pass because he is not a legislator and hasn’t actually voted pro-choice.

  9. jason330 says:

So the fetus-hating, unborn American butchering Mike Castle isn’t allowed in a Catholic church?

  10. anon says:

The Church rules only apply to Catholics… you guys are not getting this whole Catholic thing, are you?

Catholics are wingnuts, but they have a separate rule book.

And, the good news is most Cath0lics do not vote the rule book. If they did Delaware would be kind of purple instead of deep blue.

  11. nemski says:

Not all Catholics are wingnuts, and not all winguts are Catholics; they just happen to go well together like peanut butter and chocolate.

  12. Mark H says:

“Opposition to abortion is like the Prime Directive for the Vatican”

Yeah and Kirk violated the Prime Directive all of the time 🙂

  13. anon says:

Yeah and Kirk violated the Prime Directive all of the time

I guess he knocked up a lot of space chicks.

    Thank you.

“So the fetus-hating, unborn American butchering Mike Castle isn’t allowed in a Catholic church?”

Correct, when I was at Salesianum he asked for, and was denied an invitation to speak. (They’re allowed in Church, but not allowed to use Church property/functions to further themselves)

  15. delacrat says:

Is it not curious that a pro-life institution, such as Notre Dame, has an ROTC program?

  16. Tom S. says:

Ever heard of a Just War?

  17. a. price says:

yeah i think some people call it “jihad”

  18. Unstable Isotope says:

    Obama is not Catholic.

  19. a. price says:

he is muslim, AND communist (a political philosophy that denounces religion)

  20. Remember something, folks — when it comes to Catholic moral teaching, abortion does have a special place. As the taking of innocent human life, it can never be morally acceptable under Church doctrine. On the other hand, even while the Church frowns on capital punishment and urges that it not be used, its use is morally acceptable. Similarly, killing in the context of a war is morally licit — and there can be legitimate disagreement over whether a particular war meets the criteria for a just war.

And delacrat, the Catholic Church is not a pacifist institution like the Quakers or Amish, and even views military service as a laudable pursuit. It is therefore not at all surprising that Notre Dame would have an ROTC program.

  21. Dorian Gray says:

Notre Dame is a university the last time I checked. Do you think it would be a positive educational experiance to listen to someone with whom you disagree?

Christianity, retarding people’s intellect since around 35 C.E.

  22. Von Cracker says:

The catholic church is a joke….

Harboring and helping Nazis escape and rape nullifies its moral authority.

  23. delacrat says:

    Rhymes with Right,

Remember something, folks — when it comes to Catholic moral teaching, abortion does have a special place. As the taking of innocent human life, it can never be morally acceptable under Church doctrine. On the other hand, even while the Church frowns on capital punishment and urges that it not be used, its use is morally acceptable. So how many contradictions in your above post can you count?

And delacrat, the Catholic Church is not a pacifist institution like the Quakers or Amish, and even views military service as a laudable pursuit. It is therefore not at all surprising that Notre Dame would have an ROTC program.

So how can an institution that “views military service as a laudable pursuit”, claim to be pro-life?
