Offshore Wind: The Rest of the Country is Starting to Notice

Filed in Delaware, National by on April 3, 2009

The LA Times has an article about a report presented to the 25x’25 summit in Virginia that says that offshore wind could provide more electricity than the US currently uses.

The biggest wind potential lies off the nation’s Atlantic coast, which the Interior report estimates could produce 1,000 gigawatts of electricity — enough to meet a quarter of the national demand.

We knew this.  Delaware has enough offshore wind to support current demand and even to export some to the west the the mid-atlantic power path (MAPP).  The current proposal off the coast won’t provide that level of power (Conectiv and Harris McDowell did drive the capacity down for Bluewater to cut the deal) but hopefully we will have some more states sign on and build this thing up.

One of the more intriguing parts of the story was the last line, which will directly affect the Bluewater plan.

He pledged to finalize guidelines for such development, which the Bush administration failed to complete before leaving office, within about two months.

This could finally get us some off-shore wind here in Delaware and the associated green-collar jobs that we need.

But they want to build another nuclear plant on
the Delaware River (Salem) and another
near Baltimore on the Bay (Calvert Cliffs)
I hope windpower, solar, geothermal proponents can get their act together before they start building and saddle the consumers with $billions in construction costs for unfinished plants.

Ted Kennedy and John Kerry killed the Nantucket Wind Farm. They talk about it occasionally, but it’s a dead issue (at least while Teddy is still alive)

The reason? Well “Green” Teddy and John are all for clean energy, but not clean energy that sullies the view from their multi-million dollar mansions!

To Be fair Former Republican (He switched to Independent to piss off Mitt Romney) Christy Mihos who also lives on the Cape doesn’t want to have his view from his mansion spoiled.

Dunno the Delaware coast that well, but I suspect there are Mansions owned by the politically connected that might overlook this project.

Democrat or Republican, consider it Dead (but given that Delaware is a Blue state if a Democrat might see a windmill during the sunrise you won’t have clean power)

CapeWind is not dead yet. Cape Cod residents are still fighting it and there are likely lawsuits to come over some of the studies, but CapeWind got an approving EIS back in January. CapeWind opponents think that BuchCo rushed it through to spite them and the Kennedys. But the permitting process for this windfarm continues.

cassandra you are correct, and it looks like they are winning.

I hope your right, but I’m personally skeptical.

what a bunch of whiney ass holes. where are the media mudchuckers? the outrage at the rich bankers could also be harnessed and directed at those who don’t want to look at a few small white dots on the horizon in order to save the world.

  8. It will never happen — liberals like Teddy Kennedy will fight tooth and nail to prevent someone spoiling with so much as a smudge on the horizon caused by the presence of windmills ten miles away.
