Beck, Perry Disown Lincoln

Filed in National by on April 14, 2009

Republicans and conservatives love to point to President Lincoln as a great Republican who saved the union and freed the slaves. They should be proud of him, for he was a great President, indeed our best President. Too bad that modern Republicans really do not share Lincoln’s vision or policies, what with their modern emphasis on state’s rights. In fact, many modern Republicans point to Lincoln only to inoculate their stances against civil rights legislation today, and also to cover up what can only be described as the continued racism of certain Republicans in the south.

Well, now Glen Beck, and Texas Governor Rick Perry have gone the last mile in divorcing the modern Republican Party from Lincoln:

You can’t convince me that the Founding Fathers wouldn’t allow you to secede. The Constitution is not a suicide pact, and if a state says: ‘I don’t want to go there, because that’s suicide, they have a right to back out. They have a right — people have a right to not commit economic suicide…

…Texas says go to hell, Washington, which by the way has been said before. I believe it was Davey Crocket…it’s about time that somebody says that again.

Now we have two choices here in interpreting Beck’s comments: 1) He is dumber than the lint I just pulled out of my navel, since he obviously doesn’t have a clue that the Civil War was about the fact that you cannot secede from the Union; or 2) he thinks the Confederacy was right to secede, and Lincoln was a tyrant in fighting the Civil War.

So which is it, my conservative friends? Time for you all to break your silence. Is Governor Perry and Glen Beck right? Should states be allowed to secede? Was Lincoln wrong in attempting to save the Union?

Take a stand. Complete the divorce so we can all finally stop calling the GOP the Party of Lincoln.

“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

    Stupid words…

  2. Delaware Dem says:

    indivisible.

A word with 2 meanings according to Beck

  3. jason330 says:

The Delaware GOP is now sponsoring the teabagging. I guess they fear the Constitution Party getting all the credit.

Anyway, if there has ever been a political party as flat out stupid as the modern GOP I’d like to hear about it.

They always were sponsoring, Jason. 🙂

As far as Texas, I say call their bluff. Let’s see who stays in the new country of President Norris and Vice President Nugent.

Oh God, pandora you’re going to give me nightmares!

Using the traditional words, I see, Jason…

    Good on ya! 🙂

What about President Kinky Friedman and his slogan “Why the hell not?” Running as a D this time.

If Texas wants to quietly secede I’d be happy. The problem is those yahoos love war. They’d likely turn the Houston Space Center into some sort of missle site and start lobbing shit at the rest of us. Plus there are are probably more guns in Texas than in the U.S. Army. Scary people. Very scary people.

What banks are based in Texas? I say send them the bad mortgage derivatives and CDS and good riddance.

  10. Unstable Isotope says:

It’s very strange considering the last president was from Texas.

Shoot, I’ve been accusing the staunch-social-conservative GOP of abandoning the “Party of Lincoln” and Teddy Roosevelt for a long time now. Welcome to the party, folks.

On a trivial note, we need a US History buff/scholar in here, quick, and this is why: technically, I don’t think Texas ever has been a “state.” It’s apparently in their blood to not want to be 100% fully absorbed by the US. They are a Republic, but one that abides by the US Constitution and, I believe, has all the fancy trappings of statehood, but not technically a state. It’s just a whole lot easier to call them a state. That’s what I want a US History buff/scholar for. This has been something I have heard since high school, but always gave it the, “Do I really look like I care,” response. Oh hell, let’s extend that to our Commonwealth “states,” too. Are they really states? I know VA and PA are Commonwealths, but I thought there was a third. Is it MA? Anyone? Help? Let ’em all leave! Then we can invade them and merge them into existing states. I say DE gets dibs on eastern PA.

  12. Unstable Isotope says:

Kentucky is a Commonwealth as well, Smitty.

  13. Dorian Gray says:

I feel like I made a similar point a week ago in response to a post on FSP and DE Libertarian. Unfortunately I indicated an erroneous year for the Missouri Compromise and was scolded by Dr Newton. (I probably deserved it.)

My point was as stated by DD here. Lincoln fought the Civil War over it and now we are suppose to pretend like this federalism, “states rights”, ultra libertarian position is so noble. I’m all for personal freedoms and states rights, but if you talk about secession we have a big problem. And I don’t care what Steve says, it’s seditious.

  14. RSmitty says:

So, four Commonwealths? Bastards. Tea Bag ’em!
