Beck, Perry Disown Lincoln

Republicans and conservatives love to point to President Lincoln as a great Republican who saved the union and freed the slaves. They should be proud of him, for he was a great President, indeed our best President. Too bad that modern Republicans really do not share Lincoln’s vision or policies, what with their modern emphasis on state’s rights. In fact, many modern Republicans point to Lincoln only to inoculate their stances against civil rights legislation today, and also to cover up what can only be described as the continued racism of certain Republicans in the south.

Well, now Glen Beck, and Texas Governor Rick Perry have gone the last mile in divorcing the modern Republican Party from Lincoln:

You can’t convince me that the Founding Fathers wouldn’t allow you to secede. The Constitution is not a suicide pact, and if a state says: ‘I don’t want to go there, because that’s suicide, they have a right to back out. They have a right — people have a right to not commit economic suicide…

…Texas says go to hell, Washington, which by the way has been said before. I believe it was Davey Crocket…it’s about time that somebody says that again.

Now we have two choices here in interpreting Beck’s comments: 1) He is dumber than the lint I just pulled out of my navel, since he obviously doesn’t have a clue that the Civil War was about the fact that you cannot secede from the Union; or 2) he thinks the Confederacy was right to secede, and Lincoln was a tyrant in fighting the Civil War.

So which is it, my conservative friends? Time for you all to break your silence. Is Governor Perry and Glen Beck right? Should states be allowed to secede? Was Lincoln wrong in attempting to save the Union?

Take a stand. Complete the divorce so we can all finally stop calling the GOP the Party of Lincoln.
