But in response to questions from reporters in the Oval Office, he said, “if and when there needs to be a further accounting,” he hoped that Congress would examine ways to obtain one “in a bipartisan fashion,” from people who are independent and therefore can build credibility with the public.

Mr. Cheney, I’d be very worried.

  2. This entire Jane Harman thing needs to break big. According to CQ, she was caught on tape courtesy of your NSA promising to try to deep-six an Israeli spy case:

And according to today’s NYTimes, they had the story back in 2004, planned to run it before the election, but were ‘dissuaded’ from running it:

Just one more reason why even the best papers are on the critical list.

Apparently, Dick Cheney hasn’t asked anybody to release any additional information about intelligence gained from torture.

  4. Unstable Isotope says:

Cheney is just mad that he can’t selectively leak damaging information anymore. I say let’s look at all the torture papers, after all, Cheney wants to.

  5. donviti says:

anyone think that this Torture thing was a trial balloon to see what the response would be by the citizens and then prosecute once they see how bad things are/were

  6. cassandra_m says:

Don’t know about that, but I suspect not. The ACLU had an order from the court compelling the Administration to release the memos or explain why they wouldn’t. Don’t remember when the ACLU got their ruling but they’ve been fighting in court for these docs for 2 years or so. The Obama Administration was hard up against a deadline to do something. Repubs were threatening blackmail too — holding up a few DOJ appointees until they got a commitment to not release. While I think that Obama delivered on the promises he made here, I also think that he is not a guy who responds well to being forced to do anything.

  7. Unstable Isotope says:

I think possible prosecutions are coming because of public pressure. I don’t think Obama wants to deal with it, but the outcry from the public and from Congress was too great to ignore.

  8. Unstable Isotope says:

It’s time to start another apology watch: John Shadegg. Link

Anyone want to take any bets on how long? I’ll take 48 hours.

  9. R Smitty says:

Well, since it is an open thread, may as well point out Copeland’s take on Atkins beaching it.

  10. R Smitty says:

Then, there was the er… response to Copeland.

Note: geek was in awe over the skillz at play.
