Pop Friday: Ingrid Michaelson – The Way I Am

Filed in National by on April 24, 2009

Friday is for pop without apology. BTW, I saw Ingrid play the Tin Angel before anyone knew who she was. No idea what’s up with the clowns in this video though.

Ordinarily, I hate pop, but this is a nice song. I loved it before I heard it on the radio one day. The Tin Angel is a great venue. I saw Lynne Miles and Fred Eaglesmith and the Flying Squirrels there.

So, I suppose technically this is indie pop – a rare success story of an indie artist who got a song first on TV and then on the radio. But what, really, is the distinction? I suppose the difference is that it hasn’t been produced to death, nor was it specifically crafted to sell a million copies. Musically, though, it’s the same chords. My theory is that pop isn’t bad at all – it’s the pop you hear on the radio today that sucks. The Beatles were pop.

I suppose “indie pop” is more accurate. Like most music I prefer, I found it in an obscure place on the internet before it got any air time. That’s why I cringed when I heard it on the radio in a store over in DC. The Beatles were many genres, pop certainly being one of them, especially by today’s standards and definitions. With a few exceptions (like Ani Difranco), I think most produce the best music in the beginning of their careers. It’ll be interesting to see where Michaelson goes next.
