Obviously Words Matter

Filed in National by on May 13, 2009

There’s been a lot of talk over taking people at their word, and when it comes to words no one is better at hijacking them then Conservatives.  Patriot springs to mind, as does family values, life, Judeo-Christian laws, regiment, battle, defense of marriage, and take back America.  Let’s just say when I stumble on a site featuring these words I know exactly what I’m getting.

Branding is something the Republican Party excels, and has worked for them in the past.  Unfortunately, times have changed – Not that the GOP has noticed.

A member of the Republican National Committee told me Tuesday that when the RNC meets in an extraordinary special session next week, it will approve a resolution rebranding Democrats as the “Democrat Socialist Party.”

What they expect to accomplish with this stunt is beyond me, but hey, given that labeling Obama a socialist last fall worked so well for them…

The biggest problem for Republicans/Conservatives is not that they haven’t branded or rebranded enough words, it’s that words without substance are just… words.

As the baby boomer generation gets older and more and more of them live on social security, exactly how does the Republican party plan to win these voters over by arguing against the very thing that keeps them from eating cat food?

  2. speaking of their word. I really liked the commercial I heard the other day on WDEL where Rick Jenson complains about being taken out of context all the time.

Conservatives keep hijacking words and then complaining when they’re questioned about them. (I’d forgotten real Americans.)

“Patriot” is the big one now. You’ll hear it said in conversations regarding secession, taxes, bail-outs, tea parties, gay marriage, etc. It is used to say that those that disagree with what they’re saying are not patriots.

“…it’s that words without substance are just… words.”

There is plenty of substance here.

“President Barack Obama pressed lawmakers to send him a health-care bill before the end of the year, saying overhaul is needed to bolster the federal budget and make care more affordable for consumers and businesses.”

“The Obama administration has begun serious talks about how it can change compensation practices across the financial-services industry, including at companies that did not receive federal bailout money, according to people familiar with the matter.”

    The automotive industry…energy…etc. etc.

I think it is a terrible idea to “rebrand” the Democratic Party! But please don’t act like there’s no substance here. If that is what you think, than you really don’t know what socialism is!

If we’re gonna play the “What is Socialist” game by Stein’s rules then the Socialist fire departments must go!

Take the police with ya too!

Regulation is not tantamount to Socialism, and government intervention without taking total control of mean of production isn’t either, you ignorant person you!

No worries the Democrats are rebranding themselves every day as Democratic Socialists by taking over the economy sector by sector. That is far more effective than anything the GOP can do.

See this is why this just doesn’t work, David — you have to make this shit up (taking over the economy?) in order to have something to complain about. especially when you should be complaining about how your party’s policies broke the economy in such a spectacular fashion.
