Quote of the Day
Governments around the world are getting more savvy about excluding journalists from war zones. The US Government partly blamed its failure in Vietnam on the freedom of the press rather than on its military strategy. That led to me being banned from reporting the Falklands war. I had dinner recently with some senior military men from that time who said “we missed you”. There are no images to remind them — and us — of what happened.

I do agree that the war has been very antiseptic here. It’s easy to forget it’s happening sometimes, especially with no one reporting on what’s going on. We should not forget that numerous journalists have been killed covering the Iraq War.
The story is about Sri Lanka, not Iraq. It’s not even about the Vietnam or Falklands wars.
Journalists can’t get killed if they aren’t there; the coverage of the Iraq war has been pretty wide ranging, except for anything good going on.
Yes, Jason Z, I don’t understand why reporters in Iraq weren’t talking about the cars that didn’t blow up. It must have been the majority of them on most days.
