Not any ice cream either, vanilla milkshakes from Dairy Palace on Basin Road by the New Castle County Airport.

Here’s an recent article from the NJ about DE’s best ice cream haunts.

  3. pandora says:

Water ice, but not that junk at Rita’s. Gotta head down to Union Street, and it has to be lemon.

  4. anon says:

Of course the News Journal left out the great new Mexican-owned ice cream shops; one in Prices Corner, one on Kirkwood Highway at Possum Park Road, and more in Kennett Square. You can get all the regular flavor plus some great tropical flavors you don’t get elsewhere.

In NYC I used to like mango ice cream from the Indian groceries; haven’t tried it in DE though.

Where are the water ice places on Union Street now? Haven’t been there since my grandmother took me as a little boy…

  6. RSmitty says:

Ice cream, most definitely, but won’t turn down a good water ice, though…especially a true South Philly Italian Ice!

  7. pandora says:

    Love South Philly too!

Anon, I haven’t had water ice in a few years, but we went to Yatz’s usually… sometimes Fusco’s. Both were excellent. Yatz’s only had lemon, which is proper! 😉

  8. Delaware Dem says:

I like both, but voted for water ice. The best ice cream place is Bruesters on Concord Pike just over the PA line. And nothing…NOTHING… on the planet beats a triple thick chocolate milkshake from the Charcoal Pit.

  9. Rebecca says:

Ice cream from Woodside Creamery. Just too good.

  10. Progressive Mom says:

Water ice is the food my kids miss most since our move out of Delaware … there is no fresh water ice in Rochester, NY, just the grocery-store-overly-processed-doesn’t-taste-like-water-ice-but-they-call-it-that water ice. First thing we do when we hit the Jersey shore each July is get water ice.

We have lots of excellent ice cream, but frozen “custard” here tastes nothing like East Coast custard and is terrible.

  11. PI says:

The corn ice cream at the hispanic place at Prices Corner is awesome! They have avacado ice cream too. Their usual flavors are all very good and very fresh. Then there’s the white chocolate raspberry truffle at Bruesters….not bad. Water ice on Union St is the real deal…not like that stuff at Rita’s.

Love the Prices Corner place — the coconut ice cream is to die for.

First, let me just say that having to choose between water ice & ice cream is kind of like having to decide which of your children you love the most.

As far as ice cream goes, as a life-long New Castle resident I’ve always been a Dairy Palace devotee – although that’s soft serve and not technically true “ice cream.” I will also agree that Charcoal Pit shakes kick ass. Any time I happen to be over in Jersey I also like to stop by Richman’s in Woodstown which is always delicious.

Regarding water ice, I’ll agree that Rita’s is kinda “eh” – although as someone with a diabetic mother I appreciate that they carry sugar free varieties. My personal favorite variety at present is the blue bubblegum flavor made by Philadelphia Water Ice Company, which you can find at the candy store at the good ‘ole New Castle Farmers Market.

  14. Ice cream FTW.

Until Ben and Jerry’s figure out how to float chunks of chocolate in water ice my opinion stands.

  15. Fusco’s Italian Water Ice on Union St. screw Yatz’s….

    stuff is classic. Rita’s sucks

  16. pandora says:

Aren’t we feisty! Rough day at the office? 😉

  17. jhwygirl says:

Oh – had to stop over for this one, because nothing is better than an italian ice – and yes, it has to be lemon – from somewhere in Philly, the NJ shore, or NYC.

    Or maybe cherry…

    mmmmmm…..

  18. Joe Staffieri says:

I am the current owner of Fusco’s Water Ice (4th generation). All we serve is lemon and there is no additives or preservatives. All other water ice is mixed with high fructose corn syrup. Ours is Lemon, Sugar, and water, the same recipe as 1957 when my great grand father opened it. 302-276-3929–Joe.
