Republican Activists Threaten to Out Mitch McConnell As Closet Homosexual if He Fails to Filibuster Sotomayor Confirmation

Filed in National by on June 2, 2009

Yes, you have to connect the dots, but the dots are fairly close together.

In fact, since there is no reason on earth why the Sotomayor confirmation should be opposed given her resume, blackmail is actually a very credible explanation if there is a filibuster.

  1. It’s an interesting idea but I kind of doubt it. How will it hurt him now? He’s not up for re-election for 6 more years.

This is sarcastic, yes? I mean, I read the news article earlier today and thought that this was a real microcosm of the way the modern GOP does business: an ethically challenged ex-Senate staffer uses belligerent, homophobic language to demand from the Minority Leader the opportunity to call Judge Sotomayor a racist in public.

We are, of course, not to notice the belligerence, the homophobia, the entitlement to call people racists. But you can see every bit of their strategy right there. An entitlement to the politics of personal destruction — at any level they choose.

  3. McConnell was one of the few Senate Republicans to not repudiate Gingrich’s and Limbaugh’s racist criticism of Sotomayor. Food for thought, there.

The fact remains that there is no reasonable pretext to oppose this nomination….

    ….where there is smoke?

  5. No one has ever described McConnell as reasonable. Republicans would be shooting themselves in the foot by getting rid of him. He’s a strong minority leader. He certainly runs rings around weak-kneed Harry Reid.

Well no, but that isn’t really a factor in the thinking, now is it? The opposition is. The base-satisfying pointing at another one of the brown ones who probably got something she didn’t deserve is the point.

    Good points.

Well, if McConnell is gay, then Lindsey Graham will have someone to go out to JR’s with from the caucus.
