The End
According to Andrea Mitchell of NBC News, and Republican strategist Fred Malek, Palin is out of politics for good. She is not running for President.
NOW I AM VERY VERY SAD. I was looking forward to years of entertainment and mockery. Oh well.
Time to remember our all too brief encounter with the female national personification of David Anderson.
Please. Andrea Mitchell may have her sources, but El Somnambulo doesn’t believe this for a minute. Palin may think that’s what she thinks.
But this is an attention-junkie we’re talking about here. The Beast Who Slumbers can safely make this prediction: Her announcement today inevitably means that we’ll be seeing MORE of Sarah Palin, not less.
He wishes it were not so. But people like Palin are drawn to the spotlight and, try as we might, there is simply no way to avoid her.
Chuck Todd agrees with ‘Bulo. He thinks she finds being stuck in Alaska stifling, and that she wants to make money. It’s hard for her to do that as governor without ethics complaints. We shall see. She certainly picked the time to try to bury the news – Friday before the 4th of July.
A Palin spokeswoman implies Palin isn’t done with politics.
“we’ll be seeing MORE of Sarah Palin,”
Depending on your definition of more 🙂 Palin, this might break the Internet again

Or–she turned what should’ve been a blessed Palin-free Weekend into All Palin, All the Time.
‘Bulo just thinks that she was jealous of all the attention that Michael Jackson was getting.
My guess is she’s running for Prez. Now she can do anything she wants since she won’t be Gov. any longer. Make lots of money… get lots of national attention… and she sees all the men dropping off like flies. God help us!
I am hoping this is all the result of either:
1 – A grotesque bukaki video that is reeleased on the internet
2- A bizarre domestic terrorism plot uncovered involving Todd and the AIP
I believe neither of these could possibly have anything to do with it, but this is what I would find most entertaining.
I want a terrible scandal to arise, purely to get fucking Michael Jackson out of the news.
Here’s what Josh Marshall of Talking Points Memo, who El Somnambulo considers to be among the most astute analysts on the ‘net, has to say:
“As with her speech itself, the tell is that the decision was apparently so rushed and sudden that there was not enough time to come up with a plausible cover story or to get out the word about what it was.
It looks like a duck and quacks like a duck. Either Palin is resigning ahead of some titanic scandal (which should emerge in short order if it exists) or her resignation was triggered by an even more extreme mental instability than we’d previously suspected.”
What he said.
Hey, I mentioned mental issues or scandal too.
You did — and she looked even more discombobulated than usual. Besides, if she was making her story stepping down so as not to put Alaska through the lame duck phase, why not do it during the week when more folks pay attention and she could get real props for that? Besides the woman really is power mad and her only bit of credibility was that office. Why give that up if you don’t have to?
And, like clockwork, Daily Kos has more on the possible scandal. Looks like it’s Ted Stevens type stuff:

OK! The wingnut contortions on this are gonna qualify them all for Dancing with the Stars, I think.
Bring me more popcorn!
That Putin image is the BEST EVER!
She ain’t gonna run for POTUS.
She won’t even get out of the first round of the GOP primary.
Why?
Easy. Quits four colleges, quits her oil commission position, and now quits as governor.
It’s obvious pattern: she burns bridges, soils her name, and then makes up shit so she can play the victim.
I’d say she shows up again on a daily AM radio affirmation hour, hell maybe on FoxNews, but she’s done politically. And given this out-of-the-blue announcement, she just might be done as a free woman.
So true VC. One thing I realized though is that she made her name by quitting the oil commission. Maybe she thinks it can work a second time.
Don’t you imagine that some of her supporters are starting to feel burned by now? She can’t even finish one term as governor!
Maybe she’s trying to get wealthy as a celebrity. I saw the links to the scandal, but am I the only one who thinks that scandal isn’t big enough to cause a sudden resignation? Politicians bluster through these things all the time and you generally have more power as a sitting governor than as an ex-governor.
Embezzlement not serious?
If it’s proven she and hubby funneled building supplies for an entire house (what, 100k or so?) through a government project, she’s going away for a while.
Round 2:
Money quote: “I’ve never thought I needed a title before one’s name to forge progress in America.”
Good.
Now here’s the whole thing….
Happy 4th of July from Alaska! Today at 4:55pm On this Independence Day, I am so very proud of all those who have chosen to serve our great nation and I honor their selflessness and the sacrifices of their families, too.
If I may, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the last 24 hours and share my thoughts with you.
First, I want to thank you for your support and hard work on the values we share. Those values led me to the decision my family and I made. Yesterday, my family and I announced a decision that is in Alaska’s best interest and it always feels good to do what is right. We have accomplished more during this one term than most governors do in two – and I am proud of the great team that helped to build these wonderful successes. Energy independence and national security, fiscal restraint, smaller government, and local control have been my priorities and will remain my priorities.
For months now, I have consulted with friends and family, and with the Lieutenant Governor, about what is best for our wonderful state. I even made a few administrative changes over that course in time in preparation for yesterday. We have accomplished so much and there’s much more to do, but my family and I determined after prayerful consideration that sacrificing my title helps Alaska most. And once I decided not to run for re-election, my decision was that much easier – I’ve never been one to waste time or resources. Those who know me know this is the right decision and obvious decision at that, including Senator John McCain. I thank him for his kind, insightful comments.
The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.
I shared with you yesterday my heartfelt and candid reasons for this change; I’ve never thought I needed a title before one’s name to forge progress in America. I am now looking ahead and how we can advance this country together with our values of less government intervention, greater energy independence, stronger national security, and much-needed fiscal restraint. I hope you will join me. Now is the time to rebuild and help our nation achieve greatness!
God bless you! And I look forward to making a difference – with you!
Gee, guys — too bad the FBI says differently on those embezzlement charges.
I wonder who is the first to get sued for defamation — after all, making such false claims without evidence constitutes actual malice, which overcomes the public figure exception of Sullivan case.
