A Sign Of Who’s Winning The Battle For The Soul Of The Republican Party

Filed in National by on July 22, 2009

Charlie Crist objects to Sotomayor:

Crist had brushed off questions about Sotomayor’s nomination for weeks, drawing criticism from his opponents in the U.S. Senate race. Sen. Mel Martinez, the Republican whose retirement in 2010 opened the door for Crist, said last week that he supports Sotomayor.

Without warning, Crist took a stand on her nomination on a day when he had no public appearances scheduled. “I have strong concerns that Judge Sotomayor would not strictly and objectively construe the Constitution and lacks respect for the fundamental right to keep and bear arms,” Crist said.

Talk about playing politics.  Does anyone really believe Crist?  I know I don’t.  That said, I do understand.  Given what’s left of the Republican Party what choice does Crist have when facing a primary?  He has to “out-crazy” the crazies.  Not that they’ll believe him, since nobody does purity tests better than the GOP – nobody fails them more spectacularly either.

  1. The Florida Senate primary will be interesting.

That’s what I’m thinking, nemski. Given what’s left of the GOP Crist could be in big trouble.

Has any journalist asked Castle (a man who indicates that he might run for the US Senate) about Sotomayor?

  4. Castle doesn’t speak to journalists. Well, if you mean Ron Williams, but, as I said, Castle doesn’t speak to journalists.

  5. Does Castle speak to Celia Cohen?

I’m surprised Crist did this actually, because despite all the noise he raised a huge freakin’ amount of money for his Senate race. Much more money that Marco Rubio who’s giving him headaches. I really do think the Crist/Rubio race will be a test of who’s actually in charge of the Republican party – is it the frothing base or is it the big money boys?

  6. I’m opposed to Sotomayor for a variety of reasons — one of them quite personal.

Yes, I am sure that one of them is because she supports anti-discrimination and civil rights laws.

  8. Let’s see:

    1) History of racist statements that would disqualify a GOP nominee.

    2) Ruling that 14th Amendment does not apply to whites.

    3) Enemy of free speech.

    4) Supporter of the terrorists who nearly blew me up when I was a kid.
