Robinson, a first-time candidate, was selected today from a field of six hopefuls, including former Georgetown Mayor Mike Wyatt and 2008 nominee Helen Truitt of Lewes.

I don’t know much about Mr. Robinson but I think this will be an interesting race with a Democratic super-majority in the House at stake.

  1. It’s rare that you hear the term ‘elated’ from any D in Sussex County, much less the Chair. This guy must’ve done something to ‘wow’ the committee members. Maybe they’ve found another Bryon Short.

And, while R’s generally are better organized for the specials, there are at least a couple of reasons why that may not be so this time:

    1. Pete Schwartzkopf. As House Majority Leader, he is likely to be very involved in this election. He has the potential to be a transformational Democratic leader in Sussex County, and he is a true bulldog. Plus, now that the D’s control the House, that entire staff will likely be spending weekends down there.

    2. Special Election Fatigue. The R’s did a fantastic job during the Special, as they were truly the motivated side in this battle. Most of the D’s kept their powder dry and/or undercut the D candidate. ‘Bulo doesn’t expect that to be the case this time. And, take it from someone who’s done it: back-to-back specials can exhaust the most enthusiastic of volunteers.

    3. Party Unity. While those who did not get the D nomination no doubt are disappointed, there appears to be little of the intrigue that required a ‘do-over’ in the Senate race. It is not yet clear whether the R’s will have similar unity, especially with one of those militia wackos in the mix.

  2. Militia wackos? You just can’t give straight analysis can you?

David – I know that you enjoy the whole “Regiment” aspect of SCCOR, but it isn’t nearly as endearing to all.

  4. John Manifold says:

Robinson sounds like a straight shooter [very pleasing personality in our one phone chat years ago], with burnished credentials in government and roots in the district deeper than a tulip poplar. If John Schroeder’s part of the district does its part, Robinson can elevate the Democratic vote in his neighborhood. His mother was Mike Castle’s first running mate, as the migration of non-crazies out of the GOP continues.

Looks like Bodenweiser will be writing long letters to the Delaware State News for another few years:

  5. The Republican candidate for the 37th is Ruth Briggs King, according to DelawarePolitics.

  6. anon says:

His mom is still a Republican, is my understanding.

  7. MJ says:

The feedback I’ve been getting is that Robinson is the real deal. Budweiser cut his own legs from underneath himself with his actions in the special campaigning against Booth. The 37th is very winnable for the Dems.

  8. Yeah, I’ve been hearing there’s quite a bit of excitement about Mr. Robinson.

  9. Political Observer says:

Rob will be a very good candidate if he can keep focused. He’s got a veteran team. Don’t let his mother’s politics blind you, he’s about as progressive a democrat as they come west of Route 1.

Ruth Briggs King is a pretty polished candidate as well. She’s going to bring gads of money from the realtor community and she threw herself into Booths candidacy when she was not selected to run for the Senate. He’ll pay her back by walking her through the district.

This is not a democrat race to lose, this is going to be a real horse race.

Bodenweiser is a liar, lottery ticket seller, only when it is convenient christian, and most importantly a bum. no one cares what he writes or what he says.

Sounds like he would do well in the 41st.

  12. Gene H. says:

I grew up with Rob Robinson, and have watched him progress through his career from a distance over the years. From the time he was small he was always very outspoken about trying to do good things for the world, and I’m glad to see that he’s still on track with the outstanding ideals and values that were instilled as a child. I would be proud to see him serving our state in this capacity, and I am still proud to call him a good friend, I wish him the best of luck.
