Sunday Morning Open Thread

Filed in National by on August 16, 2009

We haven’t had one of these in a while. Damnit, we keep saying we are going to have an open thread once a day, and by God, I am going to schedule 50 of them right now over the next week. Ok… coffee kicking in… calming down…. ahhhh.

Cheers to Rep. Tom Kovach (R) for attending our very successful Miles for Melanoma event yesterday at Twin Lakes Brewing in Greenville. Fighting cancer is a nonpartisan and bipartisan endeavor, and I am glad Mr. Kovach took time out of his day to show his support. And mega cheers to our friend Joanne Christian, who, with her husband and son, worked their buts off to make the event a success. To all who could not make it, you missed some good music, good food and good beer, all for a good cause.

The Miles for Melanoma people were wonderful. Bravo for a great day and a great cause.

One of the best parts for me was how Tom Kovach found out about the event. He went on Facebook and saw Mike Matthews link advertising it. He then came over to DL to read our posts about the charity.

Joanne, along with her husband and her son, were workhorses. I tried to keep up, but ran out of energy long before they rested to enjoy the sounds of James Day and the Fish Fry. And the Vice-PresidentAle was phenomenal.

Great event. That Twin Lakes beer goes great with cupcakes.

  3. jason330 says:

Your liberal media is soooo liberal they need to put one liberal in all of the Sunday talk shows (Maddow) to cover up how liberal they are, A cunning strategy I must say.

  4. Major thumbs up to Rep. Tom Kovach! He did not do the usual (which would have been just fine) pressing the flesh routine, so ‘bulo did not know he was there. Otherwise, he would’ve introduced him. He owes the good Rep. a fulsome intro next year! And any other politicos of either party who come out on behalf of a great cause. And, actually, there was very little political talk, mostly talk about beer and music, ‘bulo’s kinda talk.

What a great event that was! JC and her group of volunteers were just fantastic. The beers (‘bulo drank beaucoups of that perfect Wheat Beer) were delicious. ‘Bulo hopes we do this again next year at the same place and for the same cause. This could grow to be really big! And with the hospitality of Twin Lakes to go with that gorgeous setting lend themselves to an even bigger event next year.

Finally, special thanks to DL’s own Donviti. He had the vision for this, and he really carried it through to make it a day to remember. Just a perfect day all around.

    Fulsome in the http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19980525good way…

    Fulsome in the good way

  7. Rebecca says:

With folks like the Christian family and Rep. Kovach there might be hope for a Republican Rennaisance someday. Thanks for all you do.

  8. Joanne Christian says:

From your lips to God’s ears Rebecca! :)….

Anyway…a world of thanks to DV for his hallucination, er vision of making this all happen. He laid it out months ago, and was determined to achieve 3 things…social, non-partisan, and cross benefit to a charitable organization. Check, check, and check on all three. He gathered a real cross hatch of people from who knows where. My sister came out w/ an entourage of friends, and said she just quit answering the question..”.But isn’t your sister a Republican?”, once they all got there, and witnessed no drawing of lines. The Miles for Melanoma gang were a well oiled bunch, who work for everything that comes their way, and have more than earned every donation. It was great to support a group who is so “hands on” in their fund-raising, and passionate about the mission. Geez, I hope their efforts are matched with results in the fight to better hunt down, manage, and annhilate this dreadful, invasive, silent disease. Delaware Liberal can be proud to have partnered good times with a good cause….and I’m so grateful you picked ME!!! Thanks a bunch Hef, for another “Mission Complete”….back to base now.

  9. I hate that I missed this, but after a morning of the Peach Festival (and a damned-near passing out by yours truly…freaking heat got to me), I had plans for the afternoon and evening per the request of my father. If you recall my father’s day post this year, I won’t turn my back on those opportunities, given they are only about four times per year.

It really sounds like I missed a great time and most definitely a great cause.

  10. Joanne Christian says:

So do Rainy Days get you down too Smitty? Sorry, you missed Twin Lakes…I finally blew the candle out, posted in the window, when Tom Kovach showed up.

  11. So do Rainy Days get you down too Smitty?
Depends on my audience, JC, as well as the band whose lyrics I am paraphrasing. šŸ˜›

  12. Joanne Christian says:

Guess you weren’t listening to the Carpenters either :). Not to worry Smitty, a disciple showed up, since you were called by the Father (again :)). Oh, and sorry about the heat prostration–sometimes I forget you guys are the start of that “climatized” generation!

  13. Oh, and sorry about the heat prostrationā€“sometimes I forget you guys are the start of that ā€œclimatizedā€ generation!

Feh. Two times: feh feh. I grew up in an Edgemoor brick house with a mother who thought an inside temp of 85 in the summer was chilly and 62 in the winter was warm. Those were our settings: 85 in summer, 62 in winter. She never budged. Granted, that was still better than nothing, I suppose, but to your generalization I say: feh! šŸ˜‰

  14. Delaware Dem says:

I live near Edgemoor now, and my AC is set to 78 to 80 degrees, and even that feels cold to me at times. During the winter, I set the heat to 68 to 72.
