Amazing

Yesterday a message started going viral on facebook and twitter. This was the message:

No one should die because they cannot afford healthcare. No one should go broke because they get sick, and no one should be tied to a job because of pre-existing condition. If you agree, please post this as your status for the rest of the day.

Today, Jonathan Singer at MyDD reports that according to Facebook, 880,000 people posted that message yesterday. I’ll admit to being one of the 880,000 as were several other DLers I know on Facebook. I even got a like from one of my conservative friends.

Every time I start to feel really despairing of humanity, something comes along to make me feel better.

    Suck it, haters.

I didn’t put it on mine, but my wife put it on hers a couple of days ago, so does that mean I’m covered? 🙂

Mark H, we are convening a death panel late this week to decide. 😉

I posted this too and was surprised at the level of strident Libertarianism among some conservative friends. They raised the “nanny state” concern and demanded “freedom” . I guess they did not mean FDR’s Four Freedoms which includes “Freedom From Want”.
One of other three freedoms is Freedom of Expression,so it is more than okay they hold that view & express it. I was, however, surprised at the stridency of their presentation and a little dismayed that they did not respond in kind when I hoped they have a great weekend, even though we disagreed.

One friend of mine really went apoplectic — she said she was tired of the whole health care thing and she couldn’t believe that there was anyone out there dying or going broke from not having insurance. She too did the “pox on both their houses” thing, wishing for a third party, while she went on the recite a number of the stupidest talking points from the wingnut side of the ledger. We had a good discussion that others joined in on, but for someone who sees herself as above the fray, she definitely was involved in the right’s side (the debunked talking points side) of the conversation.

In any event, SEIU has crated avatars for Facebook and Twitter that they are asking folks to use over the weekend to keep up the message. You can find them here.

Geez, I got the same nonsense from Brother-in-Law. Did we miss the new Conservative TPM? And remember the comment I highlighted in my post yesterday from Christine?

Here’s the key part: I am not a political person, and I usually base my opinions on politics as issues arise not as a liberal or conservative. That being said, my children will not be watching Obama on Tuesday if Red Clay decides to show the speech. I feel that Obama has been sneaky about this speech. I have not been able to find a real agenda about the speech, and I do not appreciate that I have not been informed on whether or not the school will be showing the speech.

I do agree with above that this has a ring of socialism to it.

How is this not political? How is this not the right’s side?

  7. Conservatives always start this way. I’m not Republican, I’m an independent but… and then repeat Republican talking points. The arguments I saw from other people’s posts were 1) those people just don’t want to buy health insurance (they are greedy) 2) those people don’t work hard (they are lazy). I think Obama can do a lot of good in his speech by laying out the case for reform again. Also, I know Henry Waxman is already preparing to having hearings again with the insurance executives. We’ve had a whole month of the Republican perspective. Everyone knows what it is now, and they haven’t offered anything new. Hopefully we can get several weeks of what insurance companies do and perhaps some insurance nightmare stories. I think the momentum is on the health care reform side right now.

People who think that there is something distasteful about being involved in the issues of the day want to be known as apolitical. Until they are. I think I know just a few people who I would think of as genuinely apolitical. But you can’t position yourself as oh-so-above-it-all when in fact you are taking a side.
