No War For Oil

Filed in International by on October 23, 2009

Uh, what? I thought we were spreading freedom and democracy. Wait a minute…

et in remarks to Congress yesterday, Pickens revealed that he is just as interested as ever in tying our national security to oil interests in the Middle East, suggesting that American oil companies are “entitled” to Iraq’s oil because we spent blood and treasure invading the Arab country:

T. Boone Pickens told Congress on Wednesday that U.S. energy companies are “entitled” to some of Iraq’s crude because of the large number of American troops that lost their lives fighting in the country and the U.S. taxpayer money spent in Iraq.

Boone, speaking to the newly formed Congressional Natural Gas Caucus, complained that the Iraqi government has awarded contracts to foreign companies, particularly Chinese firms, to develop Iraq’s vast reserves while American companies have mostly been shut out.

“They’re opening them (oil fields) up to other companies all over the world … We’re entitled to it,” Pickens said of Iraq’s oil. “Heck, we even lost 5,000 of our people, 65,000 injured and a trillion, five hundred billion dollars.”

There was never any question about the invasion of Iraq and the oil companies. Pickens is just reading from the oilman’s creed.

Honestly, I had a face-to-face conversation with no less than the current Vice-President during the lead-up to the Iraq war in which he argued that we would sell Iraqi oil to pay for the war.

Of course, this is one step further than that, as T. Boone is saying that the oil fields are the spoils of war, and he and his oil men are entitled to take them and sell them to the highest bidder.

And there you have the other option for solving our budget problems — seizing the spoils of war (the first being printing up some new greenbacks).

Wasn’t T Boone on a advertising rampage not too long ago about cutting off our dependency of foreign oil and putting serious funds and interest into alternative sources?
