Republicans Decide They’re The True Victims, And We’d Better Believe Them… Or Else!

Filed in National by on March 25, 2010

Everyone else is simply “collateral damage” who need to understand how upset and angry they are, and how Dems brought all this on themselves.

Via Roll Call:

Tea party protesters are reportedly planning a protest at the home of Senate Parliamentarian Alan Frumin later this week, prompting Senate Sergeant-at-Arms Terrance Gainer to work with local law enforcement officials to ensure Frumin’s safety.

But I guess this is okay since Democrats are the ones “fanning the flames” and victimizing poor Republicans.  And what is it with all the home visits?  Seriously, these people are out of control, and it’s a shame that Republican leadership is a-okay with it.

Obviously, given today’s GOP stance, I guess they decided… in for a penny, in for a pound.

Cantor:  “Legitimate threats should be treated as security issues, and they should be dealt with by the appropriate law enforcement officials,” Cantor said. “It is reckless to use these incidents as media vehicles for political gain. That is why I have deep concerns that — some [Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee] chairman Chris Van Hollen and [Democratic National Committee] chairman Tim Kaine, in particular — are dangerously fanning the flames, by suggesting that these incidents be used as a political weapon.”

What is Cantor saying?  That Dems shouldn’t report or discuss acts of violence and death threats because it looks political?  And then there’s this:

National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Andy Sere said that while his organization doesn’t condone the actions of the person or people who cut a gas line at Perriello’s brother’s house (apparently under the impression that the home was the congressman’s), Perriello is not the victim.

“Central and Southside Virginians are the ones who are going to have the bear the burden of increased taxes,” Sere told The Roanoke Times. “What you’re seeing is a frustration among his constituents who believe he’s not listening to them.”

They so own this crap… and it seems they want to own it.

  1. anon says:

The false equivalence noise machine is already up to speed.

  2. Seriously screwed up.

Three hours after airing his “deep concerns that some, DCCC Chairman Chris Van Hollen and DNC Chairman Tim Kaine in particular, are dangerously fanning the flames” of violence against Congress, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) will be the special guest on a conference call held by the “S.T.O.P. Obama Tyranny National Coalition,” a project of one of the numerous conservative groups to get off the ground since last year.

  3. cassandra_m says:

I’ve been listening to NPR this afternoon (after turning away from Rick Jensen who clearly had his talking points on this thing ready to go) and they’ve been giving the false equivalences plenty of time to speak this afternoon. Mark Potok is on now talking about the SPLC report on the real uptick in hate groups and extremist groups over the past year.

  4. pandora says:

I just read that, anon. It seems Republicans have chosen their path. I had hoped that they would step up, but they seem incapable of adult behavior. In a political sense I see where they are coming from… without the tea party vote they are done.

They are playing a very dangerous game.

Here’s hoping the press does their job and asks Cantor for a bullet hole and a police report, and hangs him out to dry if he doesn’t have it.

Maybe Cantor can get Arlen Specter to produce a report on the magic bullet.

  6. Here’s the report on the Cantor incident. You can be your own judge of Cantor’s truthfulness:

The Richmond cops send over a statement:

The Richmond Police Department is investigating an act of vandalism at the Reagan Building, 25 E. Main St., Richmond, Virginia. A first floor window was struck by a bullet at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. The building, which has several tenants including an office used by Congressman Eric Cantor, was unoccupied at the time.

A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.

The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies.

At this time there are no suspects.

So according to the cops, the bullet was fired up into the air, and on the way down, penetrated a first-floor window, but not with enough force to penetrate the blinds. However, the cops are confirming that the room that the billet went into is “used occasionally” by the Congressman.

Cantor said today: “Just recently I have been directly threatened. A bullet was shot through the window of my campaign office in Richmond this week.”

The Republicans have wee bit of a problem with their false equivalency argument. Where is the inflammatory rhetoric of Democratic Congresspeople? Where are Democrats comparing themselves to domestic terrorists who fly planes into IRS buildings? Where are Democratic former VP candidates showing maps of “targets” with gun sights on them? Where are Democratic members of Congress talking about armageddon, the anti-Christ, tyranny or fascism?

  7. pandora says:

Cantor is already saying he won’t release the threatening emails/letters/messages.

BTW, I’m feeling a little guilty. I called out DD on his comment today, and while I still don’t agree with what he wrote, I probably wouldn’t have said anything had I known Republican Leadership was going to take this course.

  8. pandora says:

Uh oh… white powder sent to Weiner’s office.

I’m sure this makes Republicans bigger victims.

  9. anon says:

a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction,

Wow, the leftists have way better aim!

(That was snark by the way). It is too far away to be intentional. It is a stray bullet from some punk or a redneck cleaning his gun a mile away.

    Paging Arlen Specter!

  10. cassandra_m says:

That crazy shot that happened in Cantor’s window was likely made by someone celebrating the next stop on a bar crawl.

This is how you know this is bogus from Canter:

    1. No FBI involvement
    2. If he really thought he was being threatened, the wingnut noise machine would have had the bit in their teeth over this ALL WEEK. Cantor was late out of the gate on this one. And the police report seems to undermine his claim of being threatened.

  11. It also wasn’t Cantor’s office – it’s the office of his accountant (not sure if that’s right) that he uses sometimes.

And…shhhhh pandora…you’re not supposed to talk about the violent threats.

  12. Right Cass, I think a lot of people found it suspicious that Cantor is suddenly feeling threatened on his life on Thursday for an incident that happened on Monday. He found his fear after the media started seriously reporting about Tea Party mobs and Republican leaders encouraging them.

  13. cassandra_m says:

Bet Cantor claims that he had white powder delivered to *his* office on Tuesday and it is Anthony Weiner’s fault.

  14. pandora says:

Republicans remind me of my daughter when she was three. We called her “me too” because whatever went wrong or right with her older brother she would say “me too!”

Sorry, UI. Mums the word! 🙂

  15. Scott P says:

So a stray bullet is now a political attack? What’s next, Inhofe’s car getting dented by hailstones is an attack by environmentalists?

  16. There’s now a Rovian push – Democrats are fanning the flames. Newt Gingrich and Karl Rove himself have repeated the same sentiments as Cantor.

  17. cassandra_m says:

    I heard Gingrich on NPR.

This is how it gets done, folks. There are legitimate stories (with police reports and FBI involvement and additional deployed security for Democrats all visible) and the repubs get into the media stream with disinformation. How is that possible, you ask? All because they show up at the microphone. Even though Cantor’s story is pretty much discredited by now, you will be hearing a real-live he say/she say story about this very dangerous situation. All because a *balanced* story is easier for the media to do rather than a story that tells you anything true.

  18. Jason330 says:

Rove knows what he is doing. Turn this into a he said/ she said story and the press will never be able to break out of that narrative.

  19. Jason330 says:

    D’oh. Cassandra just said that.

  20. Rebecca says:

You all know the drill. Turn the strength into weakness. We’ve been watching it for years. The media likes this crap and thrives on it.

  21. pandora says:

    About Cantor being targeted

Bullet that hit Va. congressman’s office random

RICHMOND, Va. — Richmond police say the bullet that hit a window of Republican Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor’s office had been randomly fired skyward.

    What a liar.

  22. Cantor is ridiculous. He should be embarrassed, although he accomplished his purpose of creating false equivalence in the media.

  23. Rep. Alan Grayson is calling for Cantor’s resignation.

  24. A. Nony Moose says:

Yeah, damn these people for engaging in political speech and assembling for political purposes. Where do they thing they are — America?

Then need to realize that dissent became unpatriotic — treasonous, even — at noon on January 20, 2009.

  25. Geezer says:

That’s not what this is about and you know it, troll. Go back to your cave. Take your guns with you.

  26. Just a patriotic get together to yell n****r at Congressmen and to fax nooses to their office. I just don’t know why people disapprove of that. I wonder if conservatives will now defend the flash mobs in Philadelphia.
