I Hate Using The Word Hate, But I Hate This Man

Catholic League President William Donohue:

As I said in the ad, which I wrote, most gay priests are not molesters, but most of the molesters have been gay. And I also said, that there’s no such thing as a — that homosexuality does not cause predatory behavior.

Let me give you a quick example. I’m Irish. Everybody who has half a brain knows that the Irish have a bigger problem with alcoholism than the Italians or the Chinese, for example. Does that mean because you’re an Irishman, therefore, you are driven to become an alcoholic? Of course, not.

What it means, though, if your group is overrepresented in a particular problem area, you ought to explore it. Yes, there’s a connection between Irish and alcoholism, and, yes, there’s a connection between homosexuality and sexual abuse of minors.

Absolutely disgusting.  Hmm… using that “logic” I guess all heterosexual men should be viewed as potential rapists of women, since it’s heterosexual men who rape women.  Why doesn’t this idiot, pedophile excuser, get that rape and child molestation aren’t about sex.

Seriously, if the Catholic Church intends to use this bigot as a defense and a spokesperson… they are so screwed.

Don’t believe me?  Read on…

Donohue:

“The Times continues to editorialize about the ‘pedophilia crisis,’ when all along it’s been a homosexual crisis. Eighty percent of the victims of priestly sexual abuse are male and most of them are post-pubescent. While homosexuality does not cause predatory behavior, and most gay priests are not molesters, most of the molesters have been gay.”

Donohue is still talking about the problem as an indiscretion rather than a crime. If it mostly involves men and boys, that’s partly because priests for many years had unquestioned access to boys.

Oh, since 80% of the victims are post-pubescent (in my book that’s anywhere between 13 and 17) that’s a-okay.  Nice to know.  I put pedophiles in a category of their own.  Silly me.

  1. No, it means that it is not a pedophilia problem. Pedophiles are by definition people who have sex with children before puberty. Many gays like young men and these guys had no restraining factor.

I do not see how you believe Donohue said anything offensive, let alone worthy of hate. Unsurprisingly, I agree with him. I have seen this first hand.

Forgotten Study: Abuse in School 100 Times Worse than by Priests

By James Tillman and John Jalsevac

WASHINGTON, DC, April 1, 2010 (LifeSiteNews.com) – In the last several weeks such a quantity of ink has been spilled in newspapers across the globe about the priestly sex abuse scandals, that a casual reader might be forgiven for thinking that Catholic priests are the worst and most common perpetrators of child sex abuse.

But according to Charol Shakeshaft, the researcher of a little-remembered 2004 study prepared for the U.S. Department of Education, “the physical sexual abuse of students in schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by priests.”

After effectively disappearing from the radar, Shakeshaft’s study is now being revisited by commentators seeking to restore a sense of proportion to the mainstream coverage of the Church scandal.

According to the 2004 study “the most accurate data available at this time” indicates that “nearly 9.6 percent of students are targets of educator sexual misconduct sometime during their school career.”

“Educator sexual misconduct is woefully under-studied,” writes the researcher. “We have scant data on incidence and even less on descriptions of predators and targets. There are many questions that call for answers.“

David, the line you’re drawing is vile. Bet you’d be singing a different tune if it were your child.

And, Schwartz, no one is Catholic bashing. There’s been remarkable restraint shown – restraint I doubt any other organization would receive.

  4. True, but the Church got into trouble because it didn’t fire people when they got caught then turn them over to law enforcement. At least most of the schools do the right thing eventually.

The Catholic Church bought into liberal ideas of rehabilitation that were popular during the time period. People would spend 6 months in jail for molesting a child. It is wrong to pretend it is a problem of the Catholic Church. Back then they were just following the trend.

It is one more reason why the Church should lead society not follow it.

I am Catholic bashing. An organization that teaches its followers to symbolically drink human blood and eat human flesh and systemically enables, condones, and covers-up violence and sexual abuse of children while preaching a false and bigoted “morality” deserves nothing less.

  6. nemski says:

RD wrote, “Many gays like young men. . . ”

    WTF!

  7. Yeah, how dare David draw the same line that is drawn by mental health professionals!

  8. nemski says:

Yeah, mental health professionals in Texas. Zing!

  9. pandora says:

    Good one, Nemski!

Listen up, David and RWR… teens experimenting sexually with teens is one thing. A 30, 40, 50+ year old man and a 15, 16, or 17 year old is quite another. But I’ll put you guys in the I’m okay with certain kinds of pedophilia category.

  10. Another thing the statement does is make it seem like the molestation of boys is much worse than the molestation of girls. As for the sex of the victims, there are many more altar boys than altar girls. It was the availability of the victims.

But, I hope you understand that its not only the molestation but the cover-up that is the issue. The whole idea of protecting the authority figures over victims is pure rightwing authoritarianism.

  11. Brooke says:

The Catholic League, much as this tinwit would like to change that, does NOT represent the Catholic Church. At all.

He’s an independent lunatic. That’s not a defense of the HEINOUS response the official church has had to this, but a clarification.

  12. Jason330 says:

Ya know who also sucks? The bishops. Just sayin’

  13. anonone says:

David and Rhymey are, by definition of the word “pedophilia,” correct. You can look it up. However, according to the internets: “In law enforcement, the term “pedophile” is loosely used without formal definition to describe those convicted of child sexual abuse or the sexual abuse of a minor, including both prepubescent children and pubescent or post-pubescent adolescents.”

    And, Brooke, Yes. He. Does.

  14. A. Nony Moose says:

Thanks, anonone. Before I moved down here to Texas, I spent time working as a mental health professional with the county mental health agency.

  15. nemski says:

Just did a quick look on the internets and pedophile is NOT linked to men only.

I could get off my lazy ass and check my OED, but I’m not going to.

I gotta tell ya Pandora–reading this, I understand your outrage on the topic. But, having heard him speak, and comment, and see him–he really does not come across as a lunatic homophobe or anything else vitriolic. He really postures as a fun, “favorite uncle” (but not the kind that molests you, of course–so hold the comments), who really gives a well reasoned, provocative point on much of the crosshairs the Catholic Church finds themselves. He does so w/ gusto and excitement like he’s at some family reunion telling stories, or a stadium w/ the home team in town. This is an interesting contrast, to read a print quote in whatever context he was delivering a message. I’ll be watching.

  17. the cajun says:

Circular firing squads are cute, but pedophilia is not only about sex. It’s more about power and these f**kers knew they had it and how to use it.

Donahue has been vile and odious for years but in the past quicker to respond. This one took a bit more time to address, and it wasn’t worth the wait. It falls flat.

  18. anonone says:

What are you saying, Joanne? Poison in a pretty package is still toxic.

  19. Joanne Christian says:

Agreed A1–but again, the Times mentions indiscretion not Donohue. He denounces the acts, as acts without regard to occupation–that’s all. He’s going down the road of statistics to these child crimes–a demographic you may argue with, and that is what should be argued. Again, he doesn’t defend these crimes against children–he highlights that given any job involving child contact, the same scrutiny be applied because opportunity is there, and offenders will apply. The demographic of sexual preference, according to him, is a telling fact that bears exposure from rectory to scout camp. His point being, males have access via the Catholic church–and it is very male. That’s all from what I can interpret. His other 20% creepo offenders I guess just rally for whomever is there.

All organized churches, groups, and organizations have the same underbelly history. Given the generation, it wasn’t discussed. Given the homosexual tag attributed to this behavior, it cleared the way for the Catholic church and Boy Scouts to be in the crosshairs. The other offenders can hide in the shadows of what these 2 groups combined have created as critical mass. And no doubt, they are doing just that, knowing full well, they have victims too–both sexes. Acknowledging that, EVERY group has stepped it up w/ programs, reporting mechanisms, background checks, etc. to help safeguard their own charges–and prevent becoming the “next” Catholic church–but located on a little league team.

  20. anonone says:

Thanks – now I understand what you meant.

  21. anonone says:

This clears it all up: “Satan behind media attacks on the Pope, asserts Italian exorcist.” Seriously. And that is from the Catholic News Agency, not the Weekly World News.

And intelligent people belong and give money to this organization?
