Weekend Open Thread

Filed in National by on May 8, 2010

Welcome to the weekend. Isn’t it nice not to have to be at work (for the lucky ones who get weekends off)? Do you have exciting plans for the weekend? Share your weekend plans and other thoughts on this weekend’s open thread.

With just over a week to go before the Pennsylvania primary, Joe Sestak has taken the lead over Arlen Specter in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak …
… has taken a slender lead in the closely watched Democratic U.S. Senate primary, according to the daily Morning Call/Muhlenberg College tracking poll.

The 7th District Congressman leads U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, D-Pa., by 44-42 percent, with 14 percent of voters undecided. The poll of 410 likely Democratic primary voters was conducted yesterday. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

The race to watch today is the Utah Senate race. Senator Bob Bennett may be defeated in the convention. He could be the first incumbent to lose this cycle.

  1. In the first round of voting, Bennett was in 3rd place.

KBR just got another no-bid contract from the government:

KBR Inc. was selected for a no-bid contract worth as much as $568 million through 2011 for military support services in Iraq, the Army said.

Meanwhile the Justice Department might sue them for kickbacks…

Talk about both sides of the fence…

First weekend off in about a year here. Washed cars, shopped several greenhouses for hanging baskets, brewed my firt ten gallon all-grain batch of beer all the while listening to NPR’s awesome Saturday line up. Talk about a perfect day. Alas, tommorrow will have to be a SWMBO day.

  4. MJ says:

Teabagger Matt Walsh was sandbagged in the Georgetown Mayoral election, losing to Brian Pettyjohn 430-25.

  5. jason330 says:

Ironman 2 is pretty awesome. Gary Shandling nails Arlen Spector’s douche baggyness.

  6. liberalgeek says:

430-25? Holy cow. That is a drubbing.

I do have to give Matt props for actually saying unpopular things to the teabaggers at one of their rallies. I think he is a lunatic stuck between lunatic constituencies.

  7. jason330 says:

When was the last time a sitting Senator (not named Joe Lieberman) lost a primary? Must be a hundred years.

  8. Miscreant says:

“Teabagger Matt Walsh was sandbagged in the Georgetown Mayoral election, losing to Brian Pettyjohn 430-25.”

With Pettyjohn as Mayor, the poultry industry has completed their domination of Georgetown. I guess the town wasn’t ready for someone who wears his baseball cap backwards.

I was listening to an interview last Sunday on the Spanish language program “Hola FM” on WGMD. This segment was, of course, conducted in English, so Host Kevin Andrade hired a translator. From what little Spanish I still understand, she wasn’t exactly translating Walsh’s comments verbatim. By the softballs he was lobbing Pettyjohn, it was blatantly obvious who Andrade was promoting. This afternoon, I was picking up some yucca for dinner, and a prayer candle for a friend at El Mercado, Georgetown’s Spanish food market. From the conversations I overheard, they didn’t really give a flying burrito about the election.

“I do have to give Matt props for actually saying unpopular things to the teabaggers at one of their rallies. I think he is a lunatic stuck between lunatic constituencies.”

Indeed… from a recent news article:

“In a YouTube video posted from a tea party rally in Salisbury, Md., last week, Walsh got booed after urging attendees not to vote for Sarah Palin, and then engaged with a heckler who called him a “punk.”

“I’m a punk, you’re an old, senile fart. Back off,” Walsh replied from the podium.

  9. anon says:

Letterman: “It was hot in Arizona today. Folks there were fanning themselves with their birth certificates. “

  10. Bennett has not ruled out running as a write-in candidate. He still has a lot of money in his campaign account. I wonder if this means the Democratic candidate has a chance?

  11. jason330 says:

“I’m a punk, you’re an old, senile fart. Back off,” Walsh replied from the podium.

I like that economy of effort. Walsh captured the teaparty movement in five words.

  12. jason330 says:

Wow. What a cluster fuck. I guess in Sussex County, it really is the Sarah Palin movement. BTW – that video is crying for national exposure.

  13. Miscreant says:

It would appear that Lewes and its buffoonish toy store owner, Mayor Ford, is still trying to do everything possible to thwart wind turbines. Now that they have found their proposed moratorium may be counter to state law, the asshats are falling back on zoning ordinances.

    http://www.capegazette.com/storiescurrent/201005/07016-lewes-wind-law.html

House Bill 70 (2009) states no government or association may restrict a property owner from obtaining wind energy. I haven’t read it in its entirety yet, but wouldn’t this apply to county government as well? As I plan on getting a wind turbine soon (not as a “keep up with the Jonses” status symbol, Joanne. My nearest neighbor is a quarter mile away, and I was never one to give a flying fuck about what erect on their property, or what they think of what I do), I plan on checking out the county’s requirements. Oddly, most of the new wind turbines I’ve seen in this area aren’t residential, but are at businesses on the Route 1 corridor, south of 5 Points.

  14. Miscreant says:

That YouTube video was hilarious. I would have thought the backwards baseball cap would have captured him more Hispanic votes, though.

Jason, I believe that Tea Party was in Salisbury, MD.

  15. SRC says:

Mr. Bennett should contact Sen. P. Blevins about a ‘possible write in candidacy.’

  16. jason330 says:

Where is your global warming now Mr. Gore?

  17. Jason330 says:

Did anybody watch “the amazing race”? The lesbians just sent lesbianism back ten years.

  18. anon says:

Isn’t lesbianism itself just a plot by the porno industry to snare more money from heterosexual males with totally unrealistic fantasies about threesomes?

  19. jason330 says:

Yeah but you say it like it is a bad thing.

  20. Miscreant says:

Some of my best friends are lesbians. They’re all conservatives, though.

  21. anon says:

So UD is apparently partnering with some former WHYY people to start a news organization. Anyone know anything about this?

  22. jason330 says:

The state could use a news organization.

  23. RSmitty says:

The state could use a news organization.

That isn’t “C’mon Dealware?” Damn, fooled again.
