The Man Who Would Be Party Chair continues to amaze. Instead of being chastened by having to withdraw his challenge to Party Chair Daniello, Brian McGlinchey has ginned up yet another challenge to Dem. Rep. Earl Jaques. You will recall that, in 2008, Jaques had to fend off not only Rep. Vince Lofink, he had to also battle McGlinchey, his mindless union minions, and his ‘Working Families Party’.
This time, McGlinchey is sending out James Maravelias, the Business Agent of Laborers’ Local 199, a local for which McGlinchey carries the checkbook, to primary a pretty darned good first-term legislator. Have I mentioned that McGlinchey wanted to be State Democratic Chair? And had to slink away in ignominious defeat?
There really is no policy reason to primary Jaques, who has been a dependable D vote on most issues. Maybe he’s also trying to help the oleaginous (and fellow Working Families Party ally) Richard Korn out in the primary for State Auditor by driving out the union vote. Regardless, at this point, one can only conclude that McGlinchey is trying to prove that ‘his is bigger’ than those who oppose him. If that’s the case, then Earl Jaques could well end up as the Lorena Bobbitt of this election year.
