Tuesday Open Thread

Welcome to the Tuesday edition of your open thread. I’m back to a semi-normal schedule now that I’m back from vacation. *Sigh*

Yesterday was some kind of orgy of crazy from Republicans. It was hard to keep up. digby at Hullaballoo found this example of egregious sexism in politics. The focus was Iowa’s Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, Roxanne Conlin.

Last week-end Blue America candidate Roxanne Conlin (running against Chuck “pull the plug on grandma” Grassley)appeared on a Netroots Nation panel about the unique issues female candidates face and she brought up the fact that a local right wing blogger had done a post recently about her breasts. She didn’t go into details, but I assumed it was one of those prissy “is she inappropriately wearing V-neck blouses in court” sort of thing. But it turns out that it was much more disgusting than that:

Question Two: I knew that Roxanne Conlin was a big D, but is she naturally that big of a D?

Answer: Talk about awkward. I think the only way we will ever know for sure is if we break into Dr. G’s office and see if she has been enhanced. That said seeing the picture of her in the parade is like gawking at a traffic accident. You know what I mean, it grosses you out, makes you sick, but you can’t help but notice. It’s probably a good thing she doesn’t walk the parade route…

I don’t think I need to elaborate on how many ways that is revolting.

Be sure to read the whole link to see the blogger’s defense of his post. Truly a piece of work.

In Tennessee the Republicans are trying to out-crazy each other. Current Congressman Zach Wamp who is running for governor suggested that health care reform could cause Tennessee to secede from the nation. Current Lt. Governor Ron Ramsey, also running for governor, thinks that Islam shouldn’t qualify for 1st amendment protections:

Tennessee Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, who is running for governor, addresses the novel question of whether the Constitution protects the practice of Islam:

Now, you could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion, or is it a nationality, way of life, cult whatever you want to call it. …

Now, you know, I’m all about freedom of religion. I value the First Amendment as much as I value the Second Amendment as much as I value the Tenth Amendment and on and on and on. But you cross the line when they try to start bringing Sharia Law here to the state of Tennessee — to the United States. We live under our Constitution and they live under our Constitution.

Is there anyone still doubting that this is coming from religious intolerance? I’m sorry but a man living in Tennessee is not allowed to invoke 9/11 bedwetting. If the people of New York can move on, surely he can too.

Of course she has a website: http://donotvoteformydad.com

Check out the wormy chocolate story.

    Yes, angry white people

In the Cape Henlopen school district, acting Superintendent David Robinson has taken the bull by the horns and gotten rid of a money-losing program. Now we need to see if the Voters for Fair Elections gang does more Stone-throwing at the next board meeting.

On the Newcastle County Foreclosure list is the famous and oldest community organization in Wilmington, the Peoples Settlement Assoc. You may recall over two years ago, many of us in the Community tried to save PSA from the overzealous board members who refused to abide by their own bylaws. Never in the history of PSA was there ever a mortgage taken out, but under the leadership of Keith Lake, his Bd. President Greer Peacock, and her board members this organization is now in foreclosure. PSA sits on a prime piece of real estate in the heart of Wilmington.

PSA’s website list of board members names one Frank Murphy (I believe that is Harris McDowells attorney). Also listed is Karen Weldin Stewart our State Insurance Commish. Sandra Ballard, Jeff Flowers, Thomas Lapinta, Ty Brooks are just some of the board members who will go down in history as those “whose wrongful deeds took down this great institution”. They should all know as board members they had a “fidicuary responsiblity to make sure they could pay the loans and mortgages they took on this sorely needed institution in the heart of Wilmingtons poorest, most needy neighborhoods. You will remember Nancy Willing steadfastly defended every action that Keith Lake and the board did. She continuously critized and distorted the facts and railed against the community who was organizing to save it, while she was a board member. She is no longer listed as a board member? When she on the Board she allegedly was getting a check working there, which is a conflict of interest. Remember, Tom Wagner, Auditor found various discrepancies in their bookkeeping, and Beau Biden AG office was negligent in doing anything about it, because Harris McDowell was involved. Lets not forget Harris and Karen Weldin Stewarts involvement in this horrid affair!

If we community people attempting to save PSA from its director and board had prevailed, PSA would still be servicing the community! Some of the most needy of our citizens depended on food, clothing, kindergarten, senior services, and other life saving programs.

Good luck board members, sleep well, you managed to take down the citys oldest insitution by your negligence. And also remember board members are “responsible” for all losses while they were acting as board members. These are facts which you can check out for yourself. Norman Oliver discussed this topic on his show Sunday night. Shame on em, shame on em. As you remember two years ago, if Keith Lake had stepped down along with his board the State would have restarted funding, along with United Way and other organizations. But Keith Lake and his board refused to leave, and now time has run out on them, and this fine insitution. Former Mayor Jim Sills was ready to serve as President, other upstanding citizens in the community came forward to save it. This is so, so sad! The loan was $400,000 and all that money is gone, whats to show for it?

  7. anon says:

Crappy management notwithstanding, badmouthing from your faction and from Tom Wagner alienated PSA donors and set up the property for some kind of land grab.

It will all come out when we see who ends up owning this property. Ask cui bono and follow the money back.

  8. Geezer says:

IAAC: Who holds the mortgage? What is the appraised value of the property?

  9. its all a comedy! says:

anon: don’t be ridiculous. “Badmouthing from your faction”? Either you don’t know what your talking about or you are one of them! The State of Delaware, United Way and other funders refused to fund as long as Lake and that board were there! Wagner didnt get involved until months later and did an indepth investigation proving the previous board was correct in asking questions of Lake. Lake was lying to the Board and SOME of those board members stood with him. Flowers was a tenant in the building and a close friend of Lake.

The mortgage is held by Columbia Bank/Mortgage, property was valued at $700,000 but that was years ago. The question is what did Lake and the Board spend the money on? How many payments were they behind before they went to foreclosure? We asked the question two years ago and was told the “mortgage is up to date”? Employees were let go, programs stopped. One thing about this blog, instead of dealing with emotions and hatred, lets deal with facts. Go to NewCastle County Sheriff Sales, the name of the bank and other pertinent information is all there.

I am upset because our Coalition did everything possible to save PSA. Right now there is a group hoping we can save it but this self interested Ex. Director and its board must go now.

148 Democrats voting for the war.

Naturally, Cong. Castle voted to screw you again. But would Coons and Carney vote otherwise?

  11. anonone says:

Not just me: “Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell predicted on Tuesday that if the president escalates America’s military involvement in Afghanistan he could very well face a primary challenger in 2012.”

    One can only hope.

  12. delacrat says:

Wonder if Rendell is floating a trial balloon for a run for Pres. ?

  13. anonone says:

Interesting thought, delacrat. I liked him as mayor of Philadelphia and he seems to be a good gov. But he was one of the first Dems to bail on Gore in 2000, and I have never been able to forgive him for that.

  14. anonone says:

“Health insurers are working to sabotage regulations on medical loss ratios while they are still under development as a back-door means of undermining the entire federal health reform act, according to a new report from Health Care for America Now.”

Gee, who could have predicted that?
