Newt Gingrich Caught in a Lie about NCCo.

Filed in National by on September 18, 2010

From Dialogue Delaware:

At the Values Voters Summit in Washington D.C. yesterday, […] Gingrich, who is backing Republican Christine O’Donnell in the race, told those in attendance that Coons had “dramatically lowered” the county’s bond rating[.] But New Castle County government has held on to a triple-A bond rating for years, the highest a government agency can receive. That rating was reaffirmed last week. [..] State government officials frequently point to the state’s AAA rating as evidence that they’re being fiscally conservative. Last year, the state was able to use it’s bond rating to resell some capital bonds and turn a profit.

Christine O’Donnell appeared at the very same Values Voters Summit. I wonder, when she heard that lie from Gingrich, if she rushed to the podium to admonish him for lying and to correct the record. For Christine O’Donnell believes that you can never, ever lie, ever, not even to save Jews from Nazis during World War II. Of course, we all know that Gingrich was not corrected by O’Donnell at the VV Summit nor has her campaign condemned him for lying. So then I wonder why Christine O’Donnell believes it is ok for a serial adulterer to lie repeatedly while she, according to her words, would allow millions of Jews to die, all in the name of honesty. Of course, this all presumes she knows anything about New Castle County government, a government that represents two thirds of the population she wants to represent in Congress.

Further, I wonder why Christine O’Donnell even appeared at the Values Voters Summit with Gingrich. Given her views on the horrible evil of sex outside the marriage, you would think she would be principled and refuse to appear with a man who twice cheated on his wife? I guess to Christine O’Donnell, it is only wrong to have sex before you are married, but once you are, you can have as much sex as you want, even outside the marriage.

  1. It’s pretty sickening how the Republicans have all cowed to Christine O’Donnell. If they can’t stand up to a marginal, lying candidate like her how are they supposed to protect our economy?

  2. I can’t believe Newton Leroy Gingrich would lie about something.

  3. JoeSchmo says:

The County had a Triple AAA bond rating under Tom Gordan and Sherry Freeberry too. It is often misused by politicians as some seal of approval on how they handle taxpayer money. It is simply a tool on bond issuances.

  4. Delaware Dem says:

That is not true, since you can lose the AAA bond rating depending on budgetary and your debt ratio. Maintaining the rating is evidence that you are handling those issues well, in the eyes of the market. Further, it is irrelevant to this conversation. What is relevant is that Newt Gingrich lied about it. So the question has to be why Joe Schmo is excusing Newt Gingrich’s lies?

  5. JoeSchmo says:

Then Reelect Tom Gordan and Sherry Freeberry.

  6. JoeSchmo says:

Or Elect Chris “The Pet” Coons

  7. Or Christine “The Witch” O’Donnell

  8. anon says:

Chris Coons is almost certainly the first American political candidate EVER to run against an opponent who said in front of witnesses: “I practiced witchcraft.”

If he loses this – well maybe she is a witch.

  9. Auntie Dem says:

Now, some of us had a misspent youth, but eventually we grew up and took on responsibility and and more mature judgement. Others, like Christine, stayed in their self-centered, adolescent bubbles. In Christine’s case she simply switched from one extreme to the other, both designed to direct attention to her. Narcissim is a dangerous mental disorder.

  10. Brandywine Pete says:

It is doubtful anyone could say anything good about O’Donnell so stand by for more attacks on Coons.

At least 10% of the GOP will skip this race at the polls this November.

  11. skippertee says:

Chris COONS-listens to RAP music when alone.

  12. anon says:

Christine’s pet is a large black cat with an oddly human-like meow.

  13. skippertee says:

Yeah, that’s right.I once asked if I could pet her pussy and she said wait, let me move my cat.

  14. pandora says:

You do realize that comments like this do nothing to help the Coons’ campaign while helping O’Donnell. They are also not funny or clever. I really would prefer not asking you again to refrain from vulgar, little boy’s room behavior.

  15. skippertee says:

OK,i’ll be back after the election is over or when you develope a sense of humor,tight-ass.

  16. a. price says:

Vulgarity is used by those who dont have a big enough vulgarity to get their fucking point across.

  17. Von Cracker says:

    Newt’s a whore. Nothing more.

  18. To his credit, Coons’ spoke correctly about retaining the AAA rating during his tenure at the JCC debate, backing off of the false implication on his tv ad that he created it for NCC. Iowa Dem did a great series of comments on an earlier DL post that delineated why the ad was false and it looks as if Coons paid attention.

That Gingrich got it so wrong is just one in a string of stupid that has marked his path to the GOP nomination for President.

  19. IT'S TIME TO VOTE says:

Just VOTE VOTE VOTE that’s what we need to do!!!!!!!

  20. a.price says:

trust me ITTV, EVERYONE on this wesite will vote.
i trust with that level of enthusiasm, you are phone baking and canvasing for Coons, right?

  21. Iowa Democrat says:

Newt is lying when he says NCC bond rating was downgraded, although depending upon what “down graded” means his statement would not be a technical lie. Fitch rating service on 9/9/10 again issued NCC a AAA rating as it has every year since 2002, but the press release did include more cautionary language regarding NCC finances than in prior press releases regarding the initial AAA rating in 2002 and the subsequent renewals. It’s accessible online. Some of the cautionary language including the following:

“Despite the use of reserves for operations in recent years, the county continues to maintain very high reserve levels. The maintenance of ample reserves should be sustainable given a large property tax hike to address the county’s ongoing budgetary structural imbalance.
The general fund budget has traditionally depended significantly on the economically sensitive real estate transfer tax (RTT) which has weakened substantially in recent years; the county established a new RTT reserve in fiscal (FY) 2010 which will provide an operating cushion in future years as necessary.”

”The county prudently built up very high general fund reserves from the late 1990s through fiscal 2003, due to a combination of moderate overall spending increases, strong growth in the RTT, and state legislation that increased the county’s share of the RTT. Between FYs 2004 and 2009 overall reserves were reduced more than 30% but remained strong at the close of FY 2009, providing slightly more than 50% of total general fund spending. The county addressed a continual structural imbalance, driven largely by expenditure growth and RTT decline and overall economic softening with a substantial 25% property tax increase in 2010. As a result of this additional revenue as well as cost controls, the county appears to have largely addressed its structural imbalance and expects to close FY 2010 with a small general fund surplus.”
