Thursday’s Asshat of the Day

Filed in National by on October 7, 2010

There are so many that qualify today, that I’m giving the readers of Delaware Liberal the chance to vote for their favorite.

Nominee #1: Mississippi Chancery Judge Talmadge Littlejohn jailed a lawyer who has fought numerous free speech cases in the state because the lawyer refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Guess Judge Littlejohn forgot about West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 in which the SCOTUS ruled that the Free Speech Clause of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution protected students from being forced to salute the American flag and say the Pledge of Allegiance in school. This ruling has been recognized as applying to all Americans.

Nominee #2: Pastor John Reed of Sonrise Church in Nevada who compared Sen. Harry Reid’s Mormon religion to a cult. Guess who’s a member of Sonrise Church? Sharron Angle!

“His religion’s a cult,” Pastor Reed said. “The Christian community–all the Christians, theologians and scholars, all recognize that, that Mormonism is a cult. I have books in my library on cults, and it lists Mormonism right there with all these bizarre cults. Well, there must be a reason. I mean, here a member of a cult is one of the most powerful people in the United States. Doesn’t that alarm you? And his allegiance is to Salt Lake City. Something is up with that. Something’s weird. But nobody touches that. … Harry Reid’s allegiance is to Salt Lake City.”

This kind of talk reminds me of when the rethugliucans questioned JFK’s Catholicism and that his allegiance would be to the Vatican and not the US.

Nominee #3: John Raese and his handlers/media advisers from the NRSC who wanted “hicky, blue collar looking actors” for their anti-Joe Manchin ad. Now, many campaigns use actors, in fact, our very own teabag candidate for Senate hired Judy Garland for her ads. What? Judy Garland is dead? That’s not a scene from the Wizard of Oz? That was really the O’Whack-a-Mole claiming she’s not a witch? Oh well. As I was saying, many campaigns use actors. But you really shouldn’t expressly state that you want people to portray a stereotype.

But not just any actors: “We are going for a ‘Hicky’ Blue Collar look,” read the casting call for the ad, being aired by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks.”

“Clothing Suggestions” included jeans, work boots, flannel shirt, denim shirt, “Dickie’s type jacket with t-shirt underneath,” down-filled vest, “John Deer [sic] hats (not brand new, preferably beat up),” “trucker hats (not brand new, preferably beat up).”

So the polls are open until 9:45 PM tonight. Leave your vote in the comment section and we’ll announce our winner at 10:00 PM.

  1. Prup (aka Jim Benton) says:

It is *ahem* tempting to cast a write-in vote for someone who doesn’t know the difference between Judy Garland and Margaret Hamilton, as the first President I cast a vote against once said “but that would be wrong.” Tempted to give the vote to the Raese ad — which is already costing him big, but the Pledge of Allegiance case is priceless. One for the little legal knowldge of Littlejohn.

  2. MJ says:

Prup – Oh, I know the difference between the two. But remember, it was Dorothy who said “but I’m not a witch at all” when asked by Glinda (played by Billie Burke). Thanks for your vote.

  3. plslouise says:

Democracy Now…7:00 on Comcast. All about campaign contributions.

  4. ek says:

  5. Pastor Reed because organized religions suck donkey dick.

  8. Joanne Christian says:

Pastor Reed—because perpetuating hate speech of a founding principle of religion is well…just hateful. And a dart through our earliest freedoms.

  9. Joanne Christian says:

Hey–you said you were announcing at 10pm!!!!!

  10. MJ says:

JC – the “polls” closed at 9:45 and the vote counting didn’t take that long.
