Welcome to your Wednesday open thread. Did you know there’s yet another Senate debate tonight? This is a WHYY studio debate and I don’t think it’s being carried live. I just wonder what crazy thing Christine O’Donnell is going to say this time.
Ben Smith breaks the news that the Spanish-language network Univision will not be airing a controversial segment by the conservative group Latinos for Reform urging Hispanic voters to stay home on election day in Nevada.
“Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting,” according to network spokeswoman Monica Talan. “Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.”
That’s stunningly cynical, even for the GOP. This has been one election dominated by lies backed by big money.
Certain liberals have been wringing their hands about how mean Jack Conway is because he ran an ad questioning Rand Paul’s pronouncement of faith. I guess it’s paying off for Conway because the latest poll had Conway up by 2%. Now the victim of the prank has given an interview supporting Conway’s ad.
The woman, who again asked for anonymity because she’s a clinical psychologist who works with former members of the military, including Tea Partyers, said she was surprised that Paul is still refusing to acknowlege his past views and the college antics they spawned.
“My whole point in sharing [the episode] was that Randy used to be a different person with different views that have radically changed, and he’s not acknowledging that,” she told me. “That is why I shared it in the first place.”
She added that his college years and views should raise questions “as to how genuine he is about his beliefs now. I have a hard time seeing how someone who espouses beliefs that he used to would turn around and become a conservative Christian.”
She confirmed the ad’s accuracy, and wondered aloud why Paul doesn’t just admit what occured and move on.
I’m sure this is what Rand Paul wanted to be talking about in the last two weeks before the election.

In case you haven’t noticed, since Christine O’Donnell’s shocking display of Constitutional ignorance yesterday, the Delaware conservative blogosphere is silent.
I had some Delaware conservatives tweeting at me yesterday that Chris Coons doesn’t understand church-state 1st amendment. I pointed out that Coons quoted the text of the 1st amendment and O’Donnell said “you’re saying that’s what it says?”
I am just talking about blog posts. Nothing since yesterday.
As soon as they get their scripts, they’ll be back. They don’t exactly think on their feet, you know….
Apparently today Jensen was saying O’Donnell’s right about the 1st amendment, she’s just inarticulate. I guess the right wing is going full in in taking us back to before the Constitution.
You think all these so-called originalists would be happy about the existence of documentation spelling out exactly what the founders were thinking. That must be why Texas was trying to write out Thomas Jefferson, since he’s the one who wrote the letter to the Danbury Baptists.

I said this in the other thread, but Widener was overwhelmed with calls to the Dean’s office yesterday because tea partiers were angry at the reactions of the Widener students in the audience. Clearly Widener is doing something wrong if all of the students seem to accept that there is separation of church and state in the 1st Amendment. They’re being taught wrong, that’s why they laughed at her.

I don’t think I have ever heard of a debate being taped in a studio for future broadcast. What’s that all about? Was there an audience?
No big gaffes from either candidate, exchange was relatively tame compared to Tuesday’s debate. Coons turned the ‘pet’ attack against O’Donnell, accusing her of being a ‘pet’ of out of state interests. O’Donnell says she opposes off-shore wind and oil rigs on Delaware’s coast, but says the final decision should be up to Gov. Markell, not the federal government. For political junkies, apparently the O’Donnell Campaign has just confirmed that she will attend the Civic League Candidates Forum at 6:30 PM, Troop 2, Bear, Delaware. Due to the late notice, Chris Coons is unavailable, but will send his brother Tom Coons to make a Statement for him.

External documents don’t count, except for selected portions of the Federalist Papers, which are part of the Constitution.
Federalist Papers is an awesome read. Especially if you know the context of the three authors actually publishing these papers by hand under very short time constraints while they were involved with lots of other stuff (including being the first Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Ct., but I think he only authored one paper because he was too busy establishing precedent for the first batch of our country’s traffic tickets).

Seeing a lot of people wearing purple today?
They’re wearing it in support for LGBT teens (and everyone) in light of the recent suicides. Bullying will NOT be tolerated.
It’s been championed by GLAAD, but I’m pretty sure it started on facebook. There’s quite a lot of purple in my office today.
Does it surprise anyone that the person behind the Latinos Don’t Vote project is the former director of Hispanic affairs for the Republican National Committee. He also worked on Social Security reform under W.

Long ago, before the primary was even half way in gear, I thought Coons had thought that he could make it to our event after something he had scheduled in Smyrna. Maybe I am confusing that with Castle’s schedule. It seems like a million years ago.

She is dripping in money right now. She promised the College Repubs. at Geo. Wash U. that she’d pay them $50 bucks each and put them up at a nice hotel in Delaware if they’d come up this weekend for a rally. I wouldn’t put it past her campaign to have astroturfing phonebanks for calls to Widener either.
