Our Interview with Bill Dunn, Part V: Increasing Union Jobs in New Castle County

Filed in National by on November 16, 2010

Cassandra and I sat down with Bill Dunn last Tuesday evening to discuss his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in the special election to replace Paul Clark as New Castle County Council President. Paul Clark will be moving up the ladder to replace Chris Coons as County Executive today. County Councilman Tim Sheldon is also a candidate for the Democratic nomination, and we will be sitting down with him to discuss his campaign shortly.

Here is part 5 of our interview, where Bill Dunn offers his ideas of helping union workers in New Castle County.

That was some pretty good pandering to the unions. Doesn’t NCCO have building inspectors who insure the quality of work? Is NCCO going to impose prevailing wages on the private sector? Does Mr. Dunn call in union contractors to work on his house? I don’t think so. Unfortunately, he is more than willing to spend someone else’s money to do so. Less than twelve per cent of the Delaware labor force belongs to a union, don’t they have a right to feed their families?

  2. Dana Garrett says:

Good answer. A while back I did research on this matter and it indicated that because of the training they receive and the certification processes they must undergo, construction union workers do tend to produce a better product than non union workers.

Bill Dunn is a good man. I’m looking forward to your interview with Tim Sheldon.

Dana, do you call a union plumber or roofer for your work at home? If union construction workers are better trained why do non-union companies still get the bulk of NCCO construction contracts even after prevailing wage laws that mandate everyone be paid union scale? If wages are equal the only differentiator is productivity?
