As Promised… Excellent Christmas Music
I’ll give you two classics to make up for my earlier post. Forgive me.
First up… Judy Garland (Sorry for the intro. This was the only embeddable video available)
Next, the fabulous Lena Horne.
Am I forgiven for the Christmas Shoes crap?

And this one. The melancholic undertone spoke to the WWII GI’s who couldn’t make it home–and those who ultimately wouldn’t make it home:

And, with all due respect to Charles Brown and the Boss, the best version of this song evah!:

And Christmas wouldn’t be nearly as funky w/o:

OK, I’ll stop now…
Oooh, I love those! I have the first two and am heading over to itunes for Otis. I’d forgotten that one! Thanks, El Som!
How about this one from Fats!
Warning: I could do this all day!
I think that there is a objective “best” version of every Christmas song. Garland, the original, is the best “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”
The Nat King Cole’s “Christmas Song” is the best version and
Bruce Springsteen owns “Santa Clause is Coming to Town”
OK, not even El Somnambulo can stop El Somnambulo. You can only hope to contain him. Clyde McPhatter & the Drifters with this incredible version of ‘White Christmas’:

Bet we could put together and sell “DL’s Must Have Christmas Music.”
One I sing every year: Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December”

I have a confession… I love this song. My Mom would always play it while we decorated the house. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
Don’t hate me.
Great song. That version is a little “bright” for me, but it suits the song which, like “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” it is about using Christmas to beat back the gloom of everyday life.
Nothing says ‘beat back the gloom of everyday life’ quite like SCTV’s ‘A Liberace Christmas Special’. This one’s for Tommywonk:

Great clip, El Som.
There aren’t many genres of Christmas music I don’t like. Jazz/cabaret, classical, choral, ancient European carols, US Victorian carols, it’s all good. Heck, even the country singers drop some of the cornpone and turn out some decent versions of standard Christmas songs.
