Holy Bleep! The Two Stephens, Sondheim & Colbert, Together At Last!
How cool is this? My all-time favorite composer, Stephen Sondheim, is gonna have a NYC revival of his groundbreaking musical, Company, featuring Neil Patrick Harris, Patti LuPone and…Stephen Colbert!
“Company” was the first Broadway show I ever saw on Broadway, in 1972. I was just blown away and have been a lifelong Sondheim fan ever since.
Colbert will play the part of Harry. Harry is featured in this song, “Sorry/Grateful”, one of the most moving and insightful songs ever written about marriage. This clip is from a spectacular 2006 revival of ‘Company’ in which the stage performers double as the musicians:

Elaine Stritch was good in that show.
Her version of ‘Ladies Who Lunch’ is a true classic. You can actually find tape on the web from the recording session for the original cast album where she struggles mightily to get it right. The Pennebakers, famed documentarians, filmed the session for the album.
It took her a long time, but when she finally got it, she nailed it out of the park.

I think Colbert would make a GREAT Charles Guiteau
Guiteau wrote a poem called ‘I Am Going to the Lordy’ celebrating his ‘fame’ as a Presidential assassin. In Sondheim’s show “Assassins”, the delusional narcissist basically dances and high kicks his way up to the hangman’s noose.
I’ve searched web-wide for a decent version of “The Ballad of Guiteau”, but there are nothing save amateur productions.
Colbert would be a, pardon the expression, ‘killer’ Guiteau. The part calls for a bravura actor, and I think Colbert can do that.
BTW, ‘Assassins’ is an incredible show. Saw a production of it at the Arden Theatre Company in Philly that I’ll never forget.
ive seen assassins twice. once in NY at what used to be Studio 54 and once in philly. LOVE the show. … the original cast production is pretty good.. Its the one i got used to anyway.
Colbert is an excellent actor with a solid acting resume.
I saw him in a Law and Order episode from before his Comedy Central days. He was so convincing I didn’t recognize him for sure until I saw the credits.
He’s still acting. Every night. On the Colbert Report.
