Friday Open Thread

Welcome to your Friday open thread. I had a good time at Ignite Wilmington last night. It was great meetin Rob Tornoe and reader Joe Cass. Afterwards I met XStryker and Mrs. XStryker for dinner at Orillas. Great time but I’m a bit bleary-eyed this morning.

I guess Mississippi still has some race issues to deal with.

In a PPP poll released Thursday, a 46% plurality of registered Republican voters said they thought interracial marriage was not just wrong, but that it should be illegal. 40% said interracial marriage should be legal.

Gov. Haley Barbour, with a home state advantage in Mississippi, also topped PPP’s survey of the GOP primary field at 37%, followed by Mike Huckabee at 19%, and Sarah Palin and Newt Gingrich at 10%.

The poll also found that voters who thought interracial marriage should be banned liked Barbour, Palin, and Huckabee the most among the slate of potential GOP presidential candidates. Seventy-nine percent of those voters said they approved of Gov. Barbour’s job performance, while 74% said they had a favorable opinion of Sarah Palin, and 73% viewed Huckabee favorably.

WTF? Almost half of Mississippi Republicans think interracial marriage should be illegal. That blows my mind. I guess it’s just more of that small government conservatism I hear so much about.

Mississippi bigotry, even today, doesn’t surprise me in the least.
What surprised me was the animosity against “Yankees” I felt 20 years ago when I stopped to see a friend I served with in the USAF during Vietnam.
I felt real, not imagined, hostility from strangers when I was easily ID as a Northerner by my accent.
Now I return that hostility whenever I see a TRAITOR’S flag, the stars and bars, flown.
FUCK those bigots and WE WON the CIVIL war. ASSHOLES!!!!!!

I am liking AP’s Ben Feller. He is the guy who called Obama out in his Pearl Harbor Day press conference.

Now he has written an entire article about the budget battle without mentioning abortion or Planned Parenthood until deep below the fold. He describes the Republican position like this:

…the only hangup was a Republican demand to cut a federal program that provides women’s health and family planning services.

Gold hits record and silver soars on dollar decline

(Reuters) – Gold rose to a record high for a fourth straight day and silver surged on Friday, as a weaker dollar, the prospect of a U.S. government shutdown and inflation worries lifted precious metals in a broad commodities rally. Gold was set for its biggest weekly gain in four months, drawing support from renewed euro zone sovereign debt fears amid Portugal’s financial crisis and inflation jitters as crude oil and corn hit new highs this week. Bullion broke above key resistance on technical charts and could target above $1,500 an ounce.

BUT Obama can run a 1.5 trillion dollar deficit without worry…

    Uh-oh:

Carper says despite accusations flying on both sides about who’s to blame for the stalemate, he’s confident today will bring some kind of agreement.

If Carper is in on it, it can’t be good.
