Weekend Open Thread

Filed in National by on May 7, 2011

Welcome to your weekend open thread. It looks like it’s going tombe a beautiful weekend, so why are you reading a blog? Why am I typing on one?

So, some conservative bloggers went collectively nuts over nothing. Yeah, I know, water is wet, the sky is blue.

Hours after President Obama left ground zero yesterday, ABC News’ Jake Tapper tweeted a photo of an American flag being removed from a building there. “One minute to air and they decided to take the flag down from the live shot!” he wrote, referring to the live shot he was about to do for a news segment. Upon discovering this, conservative bloggers quickly descended into fits of hysteria, because they assumed that Tapper had meant the flag was taken down earlier in the day right before Obama had gotten there. Michelle Malkin asked, “Does flying the American flag at Ground Zero now constitute “spiking the football???” Another blogger, Doug Ross, went further off the deep end:

This administration and, by extension, the Democrat Party are now so thoroughly divorced from the history, traditions and morals of America that we might as well admit the Marxist left has executed a successful coup d’état on this Republic.

Remember all that crap about the flag pin? I call that proto-birtherism. It’s back, baby! Someone wrote on a blog recently (I can’t remember which one) that people might take conservative Obama critiques more seriously if they didn’t freak out over every small thing. It doesn’t look like they will follow this advice.

So, ummmm….yay Florida? Florida finally banned bestiality and it also outlawed students showing their rear ends?

The bestiality bill (SB 344) bans sexual activity between humans and animals and has been championed for years by Sen. Nan Rich, from Sunrise.

Rich took up the anti-bestiality fight after a number of cases involving sexual activity with animals in recent years, including a Panhandle man who was suspected of accidentally asphyxiating a family goat during a sex act and the abuse of a horse in the Keys. The bill would make such acts a first-degree misdemeanor.

Also passed by the House and Senate Wednesday is the so-called “droopy drawers bill” (SB 228), will will force students to hike up their pants while at school.

Students caught showing their underwear or butt crack could face suspensions and other punishments.

I wonder what Florida will do if a mooning picture makes it into the school yearbook? Is the fine doubled?

    I ignore conservative bloggers.
Their “minds ain’t right” now, weren’t before and won’t ever be as long as a MAN of color occupies the Oval office.

I don’t care to think about how you asphyxiate a poor goat during sex.
I can only imagine it wasn’t consensual on the goat’s part.

After losing a substantial amount of weight, I now wear both belt AND suspenders to preclude advertising my ASSets.
But when my DEPENDS are full, it’s hard NOT to have “droopy drawers”.

I guess the President now has the sole and unilateral authority to assassinate an American citizen:

I don’t care what terrorist ties he has. He is an AMERICAN CITIZEN. He has FIFTH amendment rights, per the U.S constitution. The amendment gives no war exceptions.

Bush didn’t even take the step of attempting to assissinate an American citizen. Are you all even following up on this, or are civil liberties, abuse of powers, and the ‘imperial presidency’ you liberals bring up only when a Republican is president?

  3. jason330 says:

Libertarian my ass. Obama can’t win with you Republicans so your critique gets lost in the white noise of your stupid complaints and petty grievances. .

  4. anon says:

Bush didn’t even take the step of attempting to assissinate an American citizen.

    Now who’s being naive, Kay?

  5. Delaware Libertarian says:

    anon,

I’m not being naive, it’s the truth. Bush never attempted to assassinate an American citizen, but Obama has

    (4th paragraph).
Obama has gone even further than Bush.

  6. Delaware Libertarian says:

    Jason 330,

When is the suspension of the fifth amendment a petty grievance? By the way, I’m not complaining, I’m just pointing, in the form of questions, that the liberal blogosphere, including this site, does not really care much about civil liberties (with the exception of greenwald and one editor at dailykos who posts late at night). For you all, it’s a tool to gin up opposition to a Republican president when he does it. If you all truly cared about civil liberties and the expansion of presidential power, then you would be disgusted with the whole situation (FISA wiretaps, Patriot Act continuation, relentless drone strikes in Yemen and Pakistan, etc.)

But as I learned in the past few years: Civil liberties are to the Democrats, what deficits are to the Republican leadership (Bush, Mcconnell, etc.). Issues to whack the opposition with and to fire up the base, but not to actually follow when one is at power.

  7. anon says:

Civil liberties are a lost cause.

  8. Aoine says:

No, they are not, there are people out there that fight for them every day and actually make some headway. Small victories, but victories.

and when that Libertarian puppy we have posting here has done half of what I have to support and defend civil liberties, real civil liberties, that effect real people, really, every day single day – then we might have a discussion

until then, as far as I am concerned, some ass-wipe terrorist ( I really dont care who they are or where they hail from) gets taken out,FINE!

come talk to me about their civil liberties when your family has been bayonetted to a wall, or blown up. Then we will talk about how you feel about civil liberties – until then as far as Im concerned you are just some pie in the sky, pampered American idealist, who has never really suffered under terrorism that just wants to simper about the “unfairness” of it all because it sounds intelectually progressive.

    Grow UP!

  10. I hope you’re watching 60 Minutes right now. The interview with POTUS about OBL raid is riveting.

I missed 60 Minutes last night but the video is up on their website and you are right, it is riveting. WOW. It is comforting to know that the guy in charge is that smart and careful.
